We also struggled with "do we just let it die (35K), or do we use it on a nothing stay?"

We decided to use it in town, and at first I thought it was a big nothing, but now since we're still not ready to travel afar since we already live in a relatively low risk state, we are talking about using another expiring one (in Jan) which I'm pretty sure will not qualify for extension...

Even though a CY in our town wasn't exciting, we had a MUCH shorter drive home from a dinner, and it was actually fun to spend the night in a hotel...now granted, it had its issues (so much smaller than our home, noise from the people next door) but it served to remind us everything we used to hate about traveling.

We have some other options for our other cert and we're going to try somewhere different, also with a restaurant close by. Otherwise we might as well have thrown the cert in the toilet. Some of you may choose to do that.

Amex/Marriott forgot to credit my account for my free night award certs. After a lot of back and forth, they eventually credited my account for the cert in February 2020. A month later, low and behold I got a 2nd cert. Both are expiring 1 year after their issuance/credit, so February and March 2021. I don't see myself traveling before their expiration.

If I ask Marriott to extend the expiration, do you think they'll wise up and take back one of the certs? I could try booking something using one of the certs, call them to extend. Cancel the reservation and book using the newly extended cert, so that the IT rep only ever sees one cert in my "inventory".

Thoughts? I don't want to lose my literally free night, but I also don't feel safe using them quite yet. Thanks

Per post # 1 of this thread, all certs are being extended until Aug 1/21 (on Dec 11). Does not apply to Travel Package certs.

The implication was that mine were not automatically extended. They still show their original expiration dates. From my understanding, the extension is already in effect so mine must have been missed somehow. Or is the extension still pending?

You won't see the extension in your account until December 11th.

New question (I think) - if you currently have a certificate tied up in a reservation, and you cancel that reservation, will that certificate now have the extended expiration date?

I’m pretty sure that question was asked when the certs were first extended to Jan 31 and the answer was yes, they will all be extended.

Thanks, my concern was I had NO IDEA when the cert was originally issued. Hopefully I won't have to cancel the reservation I've got it attached to. I still have a few live ones with different expiration dates, will be interesting to see what happens on Dec. 11.

Is there even an option to upgrade cert to a different category.
Its not like I don't want to use, but there is no cat1-4 hotel in my country and I can't travel out this year.

Hi shevboyz,

The Hotel portion of the Travel Package cannot be upgraded or downgraded to a different category.

If your Travel Package has an original expiration date in 2020, or which will expire before July 31, 2021, you will be able to redeem it through August 1, 2021.

I’d be really disappointed if my 2 travel certificates do not get extended. I was intended to use both this year but had to cancel due to covid. It’s really not fair for us who can’t travel because of pandemic.

I feel Hilton is much more generous with giving status and extending the free night usage. Before pandemic I was so loyal to Marriott wherever I travel I book Marriott properties but I would seriously consider switching to Hilton after pandemic as I feel they treat loyal members better.

Both Hyatt and Hilton have been much more generous with extensions. If Marriott insists on only offering half hearted extensions, I for one will definitely shift all my stays to Hyatt and Hilton moving forward. When hotels are trying everything they can to survive and every bit of revenue counts, I am just surprised that Marriott isn't trying harder to keep all their members happy

I have two. Both are showing. I have seen in the past a cert get erroneously attached to a points booking after it was actually completed, so I recommend contacting them to resolve this.
