Earning preference changed to miles without consent

PSA: confirm your earning preference to avoid surprise.

After a recent stay at a Marriott property, I noticed I was credited with United miles, not Marriott points. I have United MP # there due to RewardsPlus.

I find it irritating that I did not change any preference setting in my profile by myself - my prior stay was correctly credited with points - and that the value of miles (1x room rate) is significantly lower than points (15x room rate as Platinum)

Anyway I can ask the hotel or Marriott to investigate who made the change without my knowledge (e.g. hotel front desk?) and credit points instead?

Thank you!

A suggestion, Marriott will allow you to set-up a security code that has to be provided before changes and/or point usage is performed by a phone agent. I set that up for my account years ago and now every time I call in to make a change to my account or order an award, I have to provide that code before the phone agent can complete my request. And while I'm sure it won't completely fix every "mysterious" change to my account, it might be able to reduce chance occurrences of changes.

Marriott/Bonvoy earning preference changed from points to miles without consent

Wow, glad i found this post, I recently had two stays credited with miles not points, I have been a points earner for over 30 years, this was totally random, I only noticed as the accrual was substantially less than usual.

I have been in contact with Marriott/Bonvoy and they claim that only I can change the preference, which was not the case, waiting to hear back as this was escalated.

I thought my account was hacked.

The irony is that the "miles" were posted to an airline I haven't flown in years, and will never fly again, it is just the ff # had been there forever.

Not sure what happened, any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to PM one of the Marriott Bonvoy Lurkers to see if they can help you find out what happened and how to ensure it doesn't happen again.
