This thread refers to the various Marriott brands within a specific geographic area. Marriott Bonvoy hotels in XX usually have posts asking which property is better, etc. Trip reports are usually better suited in the property specific threads.

Can someone who knows list the names of the hotels here in this long thread? Here are the names, addresses, email contact, commonly used abbreviations and some basic info about each hotel. (Location information, CL and breakfast information, UG experiences reported within the thread, typical room layout and frequently mentioned basic advice for different properties.) Keep in mind most posts indicate these are all great hotels. Hope this helps. CJK
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (JW) 4 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 2, Bangkok 10110, Thailand between the Phloen Chit and Nana BTS Stations. There is a pretty large CL. Elites mostly report having complimentary breakfast offered only at the CL and not in a restaurant. Some are bothered by the hotel's proximity to the Nana district and think the hotel may get some associated business while others (myself) have not really noticed this unless looking hard to see it. The hotel was recently renovated and there are a few posts showing pictures. UGs are usually to the club level regular room where the bathrooms are interior (no outside glass wall) and feature rather small showers but great soaking tubs. Unlike the other hotels listed here, the toilets are not in enclosures.
  • Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel (Ren) 518/8 Ploenchit Road Khwaeng Lumphini, Khet Pathum Wan, Bangkok almost attached to the Chit Lom BTS Station and the SkyWalk. One can reach the platform without having to walk on public sidewalks and by using escalators/elevators in the building next door, so most feel this is the property with the fastest and easiest access to BTS. The CL is smaller than the JW's and sometimes gets full. Some elites report having a choice of the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant (which is quite good and huge) while others report having that request denied. Latest reports indicate the restaurant breakfast is offered as of April 2018. The hotel does not have many suites so UGs are usually to corner rooms which often have seating and/or dressing areas as well as larger bathrooms with full glass walls. IMO this is the best/most convenient hotel for a first timer looking to do typical touristy things in Bangkok.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok (CY) 155/1 Soi Mahadlekluang 1 Ratchadamri Road Bangkok is about a five minute walk to either the Ratchadamri or Chit Lom BTS Stations. The hotel operates tuk-tuks to/from the BTS Station. The hotel has a CL and consistently offers elites a choice of breakfast there or in the restaurant. The CL is on the top floor of the hotel and has outdoor seating. Having stayed at the hotel several times as a P, PP and LTP I have never been given an UG, so if there are others who can chime in on that please do. The regular room has a small interior only bathroom with a window overlooking the room and no tub, only a walk-in shower. IMO the price can makes this a great choice, as it is convenient to many places a visitor will go. Sometimes it can be half the price of other Marriott options and they often run double points promotions. (Call the hotel to ask, it cannot hurt.)
  • Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park (Sukhumvit Soi 22) 199 ถนน สุขุมวิท ซอย 22 Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand is about an eight minute walk to the Emporium Mall and Phrom Phong BTS Station either down the Soi sidewalk or through Queen's Park. The hotel operates a regular shuttle to the BTS Station although some have reported trouble catching it back to the hotel. The CL is large, with an outdoor deck, and most people report not being given a choice for the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant. Most Plats report getting UG to a suite, with the M Suite seeming to be most common. It has a living room, bedroom and single large interior bathroom with separate walk-in showers and tubs. This is the largest hotel in Bangkok.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Soi 57) 2 ถนน สุขุมวิท 57 Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand ([email protected]) is a two minute walk to the Thong Lo BTS Station. Getting to the station involves crossing Thong Lo intersection which can be daunting. The hotel is about a ten minute BTS ride to the central malls, the Ren, etc. The area is a little quieter and more "Thai" than the more touristy/business area where the JW, Ren and CY are located. Some people report being able to have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant while others report lounge only. The CL is about the same size as the Ren's and can get crowded in the early evening. The hotel is on the higher floors of a 40+ story building and the CL is located on one of the top floors, offering stunning views of Bangkok. There is a rooftop bar on the top of the building with great views, too. Elites are often given a coupon for a free drink on the roof. Plats report mostly getting UGs to a two room suite with an extra half bath. The main bath includes an enclosed toilet, a single large walk-in shower and a large soaking tub that can easily seat two. (While the tub is large, the JW, Marquis and Ren tubs are more comfortable for a single person looking to lean back and relax.) IMO this is the quietest of the hotels listed here.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse 262 Thanon Surawong, Khwaeng Si Phraya, Khet Bang Rak, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10500, Thailand is the newest hotel. As of April 2018 there are not many posts from users who have stayed, nor is there an abbreviation being commonly used on this forum. The hotel is not attached/close to a BTS or MRT station but is near the Silom business area and some more popular adult entertainment establishments.

Barracuda, compared to prices anywhere in North America or Europe, BKK prices are very cheap on average. What we normally pay for a roadside Courtyard or Springhill Suites gets a JW Marriott in Thailand.

As to Ryan, are you a new Gold? That doesn't get you much of anything unfortunately, certainly not concierge access or anything. But, as stated, you can have huge breakfasts at a pub or somewhere for a few hundred baht.

Yes, I'm not sure what the comparison point is, but Bangkok hotels are typically about a third the price of "comparable" properties in major North American or European cities (or Asian cities such as Hong Kong or Tokyo). And of course, in some ways, there are few truly comparable properties anywhere, due to the special qualities of Thai service.

I am not new, but definitely inexperienced. I just done travel much.

Also, I'm not super concerned about value in Bangkok compared to other destinations for my points and certs. My typical travel takes me to Disneyland and Hawaii and I always use my timeshares in Hawaii and the DL properties are cat 6+.

I had read in some reviews on another travel site that some Bangkok Marriotts offer breakfast to golds. It appears that's not the case based on the replies so far.

My current plan is 3 nights at the Sheraton Royal Orchid using 37.5k points followed by 2 nights at W Bangkok.

You probably read outdated info. Access to lounge which include breakfast for GOLDs was a benefit of the Marriott loyalty program until last August devaluation/merger with SPG. GOLD status with SPG never had the breakfast benefit.

Cannot say anything about US/Europe, but as for Asia, this may not be actually correct. Of course, prices in HK or Tokyo are somewhat higher generally, but x3 difference is questionable.

I will take IC brand as example since I have monitored their prices for quite a while and they are similarly priced in points.
I have just now checked a random date for IC in Bangkok vs ICs in Tokyo and got comparable rates. I'd say that aside from sakura season Tokyo ICs are more or less comparably priced to IC Bangkok and at times could be cheaper. Same is true for at least one IC in Hong Kong (Grand Stanford). The insane pricing of the main IC Hong Kong is more due to its location.

You could say that IC Bangkok is a better IC and I would personally agree here, but still, I frequently see it being sold for 6000-7000 THB/night for non-Club room, and IMO that’s an extremely poor value.
Then, when in Tokyo Ibis, as an example of absolutely basic accommodation, costs 100 USD/night, having IC for 250-300 USD/night makes sense. But in Bangkok Ibis costs 30-40 USD/night, and IC is 200-250 USD/night.

P. S. Making unadjusted comparisons to US in itself is a strange approach. Thailand has lower average income and lower prices, of course hotels are supposed to be cheaper than in US. I am lazy to dig the data, but if we calculate hotel nightly price as a percentage of median salary, I am pretty sure Thailand will turn out to be more expensive than US.

P. S. Wonder what 5* hotels you get for 80 bucks in Bangkok. You may get this price on ROS occasionally (but ROS is not proper 5* IMO) or possibly on LM with BRG. Other than that, even Holiday Inns usually cost more.
Yes ROS, I have had Westin for 100 a couple of times. I just troll rates until I find a BRG.

Barracuda, I doubt if too many Thais making 10,000 baht a month are looking at Flyertalk to size up Marriott properties. Most on here are frequent travelers from North America, Europe, Australia and major cities in Asia. We could stay in a 350 baht a night guest house if we wanted to, but we don't. So, we compare our costs in BKK to elsewhere for Marriott properties, as the thread is meant for.

Oh cool, I will try for Westin then.

Just stayed there few days ago and really enjoyed it (well, lounge is below average, but suites and front desk staff are amazing).

P. S. Been at ROS recently too, and I think I had enough of it. Would rather book a Courtyard at that reward price point.

You don’t have to necessarily factor in income differences, adjustment for general prices is enough. If pretty much everything in Bangkok is substantially cheaper than in Tokyo, while IC costs about the same, IC in Bangkok is more expensive in relative terms.

Besides, Bangkok is one of the major cities in Asia.

Why are you talking about a non-Marriott brand in a Marriott thread?

It's really not.

4-5 star in Bangkok will typically price between $100 and $300 US. 4-5 star in Hong Kong or Tokyo will typically price from $400-$1000+.

Before the merger, you needed 50 nights for Marriott Gold. Now Marriott Gold is only 25 nights/yr. If you did 50 nights in 2018, your new status is Platinum and you will still qualify for breakfast.

In what world are BKK hotels expensive? In what other city can you find so many 5-star properties under $200? I just paid $114 for the amazing Marriott Sukhumvit Soi 57, the Queens Park Marquis could've been had for a tiny bit more. The St. Regis can be had for under $200, and it's similarly cheap in other chain. And we're talking about hundreds of full-service western hotels… there is SO MUCH COMPETITION.

Against those cheap prices the rewards rate are outrageous… but that's because the cash rates are cheap, not because the rewards rate are expensive.

Thank you for my smile this morning. Yes, let's talk about average wages in Thailand.

The average monthly wage in Thailand as of September, 2018 was 14,075.55 baht, USD $440.15. My favorite hotel in Bangkok is SGS, at which standard rooms can usually be had in the THB 6,000++ range per night. THB 6,000++ = THB 7,062 = USD $220.74.

So, as a percentage of median (the only data I have is for average salary, which is probably what you meant, anyway) salary, one night at SGS is about 15 days' wages. However, as catocony pointed out upthread, there aren't a lot of average Thais staying at 5* properties here.

You could ask ROS about the cost of buying lounge access ( assuming that's something they still offer), or maybe it's possible to select club floor using points? This is one of the very best lounges and, depending on cost/availability) it might be something worth considering. But even if not possible, it's a "kid friendly" hotel and popular with families.
Edit to add: why not 5 nights ROS , using 5th night free on points?
