Would you lose lifetime status w/o a paid stay every 24 mos?
|
What is so unclear about the definition of a "paid stay"?
It's nothing other then a paid stay (a stay that is paid for)............... and, by the way, Marriott is not Starwood and even if so, Starwood award stays are not "paid" !! Does this mean that activity from redeeming points, buying points, or earning points by shopping actually won't reset the expiration counter?

I emailed them and asked about point expiration and this is the reply that I got on Tuesday:
I spoke with our account auditors to see in what situation they enforce the 24 month activity rule. I was informed that the only time they enforce this rule is when a member has unpaid hotel bill, or owes Marriott Rewards points; and this is only after repeated letters being sent to member, and no responses being received to rectify the situation. Your account shows you have no outstanding hotel bills, nor do you owe Marriott Rewards points (meaning your account is not in a negative balance), therefore your account is in no danger of being cancelled. If there were to be a systematic function implemented that would automatically cancel members accounts after 24 months of inactivity, members would be notified of this, and encouraged to accumulate some activity to avoid having there accounts cancelled. As of today, no such systematic function exists in the Marriott Rewards program. I will keep this email though, just in case |

But I also agree with your keeping that email. It is better to be safe than sorry. ;) |

Does it expire for all status holders ? With that said, AFAIK, Marriott doesn't enforce that rule. My wife had an account with almost 10 years of no activity and the account/points were still active and available. |

I do believe that Marriott reserves the right to close accounts if there has been no activity for 24 months.

Best way to keep points alive
Can someone please advise the best way to keep some points alive in my wife's account? Shopping portal, giftcard purchase?
No plans to stay at a marriott in the very near future. I think she has until April 2013 before they go poof. |
Given your proximity to BWI, I would check for a low weekend rate at a FI, on a weekend that would be considered to be a slow period. You should be able to find one over the next 60 to 90 days for $59.00 +/-.
This is based on the point balance being worth protecting. |
was hoping for something cheaper :(
The point total I'm trying to keep alive is 6,900. |
Get the Marriott Visa. Comes with some bonus points and at least Silver status. Keep the card and use it at least once a year and your points will never expire. The basic card costs $45 a year, but is free the first year.

Would moving some points from her Ultimate Rewards account keep it alive? We have oodles of those...
I'm going to have her to a credit card application either tonight or tomorrow. She got a 50k offer from Chase for United points, plus I'll probably have her do a USAir application (so we can each have 40k points), maybe a Hilton card so she can get the CVS points and also possibly 2x50k American Airlines. I was not going to do an Marriott card... |
While MR states points expire in two years if no activity, I don't think Marriott has ever zeroed out someone's points because of inactivity, so I wouldn't panic.
6900 isn't even enough for a one night stay at a category 1 hotel, unless you find a point savers award. Regards, RIP... |
Yeah I think the official rules say marriott 'may' expire points after 2 yrs of inactivity, but it doesn't actually happen often.
