I know Marriott & IHG are pretty good about not zeroing out balances at the 12 month mark. Not sure about the other chains (Hilton definitely does, although they've gotten better about giving notice).

Here are our experiences on the major hotel chains.

IHG has points never expire policy.

Marriott does not enforce the expiration policy, nor the Silver status which seems once there, it is there forever even without activity or credit card ownership.

So was Hyatt but that would change after the devaluation announcement this year. They said they would start enforcing the expiration policy starting this year.

Both HHonor and SPG delist your account after 12 months non-activity. However on HHonors forum there are reports that a phone call to HHonors the accounts were promptly reactivated and points restored, WITHOUT a fee.

Both used to have very narrowly defined activities in order to keep account alive - namely only paid stay and CC charges. Though they have changed that since last year, now an award stay would take care of that from what I understand but not 100% verified.

Just so you know, that number of points is worth something like $15-$20 (points divided by 200). You could get a Marriott CC and get a 50,000 point or so bonus.

Please look to whom you're replying before giving advice that's not applicable worldwide. Right at the left of the post you replied to, it says:
The credit card with the signup bonus you mention is not available in India!!!!!

Many apologies. Those points are worth about 927 Rupees.

My point was not about the CC, it was (worldwide) that it's probably not enough to worry about. :p

Same with my account. Until mid last year, the only stay that I had with Marriott was for more than 15 years. I think my last activities was on 1995 or even before that. I believe the program name is called something else.

My 700+ points are still there and that 1 night still count toward my life time nights :)

I do not use my marriot account very often- but I do have a decent amount of points built up - how often do I have to have activity before my account is deleted and I lose my points?

Points don't expire at marriott. You can leave them in your account for a decade and they'll still be there waiting for your return! No doubt heavily devalued.

I think the T&Cs do allow for point expiration but Marriott makes a very big thing about the fact they don't and I've not heard of anyone suffering expiry.

That's definitely a good benefit that not all other hotel chains give. I've had other accounts closed due to inactivity, so it is nice when a hotel chain doesn't force you to proactively manage accounts with no recent stay activity.

In my case, Marriott has nothing to worry about. IHG . . . to me it is a big benefit that points don't expire. I stay there pretty rarely, but when I do, it's always nice to know the points are still around.

BTW . . . love the comment, "No doubt heavily devalued". A-friggin-men. ^

I've got a bunch of points saved up and the last transaction date was September 2nd, 2013. Do you know if I have to stay somewhere in the next couple of days to keep these points active or do I have more time?

I am finding mixed results:

I'm certain this won't answer your question correctly, but just to be on the safe side I'd stay at least once every 12 month period.

Before I actually started paying attention to these programs very recently, I had three SPG accounts and each time lost points because there were some 12 month periods where I never stayed at a W. I had the same thing happen with Hilton, I think twice. Now I ensure I stay at least once every 12 months and have not lost points since :)!

AwardWallet (perhaps getting the data from Marriott.com) believes there's a 2-year expiration (if no activity).
