Signing up to buy $1000 visa/mc gift cards
You can buy the $1000 cards on Simon's volume site. Their regular site only sells $500 cards.
If you're new, or haven't bought anything in a year, you need to register at https://www.simon.com/volume/register-consumer
As part of the registration process, you will have to go to a brick and mortar mall and buy at least $3000 in cards in person, as well as filling out some paperwork while there. After that, you can do everything online.

As of Nov 2020, Simon Mall Gift cards will only work for $99/swipe for money services at Walmart and many grocery chains.

$1000 gift cards are available indefinitely.

Amex is more than happy to let you pay for any amount of SMVGCs you wish to purchase.

What they are obstinate about is giving you any value whatsoever for your purchase in way of points

You can buy them and it will process, but you will not receive any MR points and the spend will not count towards SUB required spend. So, really, why do it?

Yes, from what I see, SMGC is history, and there is too much risk to add the X amount to a CC account that you known your banks are watching it, then try to dissolve it via a small section of stores for MO, which can be shut down any days, who know ?!

Way to much risk if you ask me.

Perhaps I should have been clearer and expand more on my question. What I meant is if anyone has had success in attaining the Amex MR points with purchasing SM VDGCs at all lately. I am aware that it typically doesn't work with Amex, but there is a particular SM Premium Outlets in my area, and the purchase of the SMVGCs from their Mgmt office usually codes as "Merchandise", as opposed to "GC". (and yes I am aware of L3 that Amex can get access to)
I'm working on a Amex retention offer requiring spend, and made a purchase of the same mentioned above yesterday...so I will inform of the outcome..

Interesting - I hadn't heard this before. If that really works, that'd be great. There's one less than half an hour away for me.

No, you won't get points at Simon using Amex. If there is one that is gonna be a unicorn. It isn't a matter of merchant coding. Amex sells gift cards through Simon- they are well aware of the location of each office.
