THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

60 days? That would be great! Do you have to notify FR, or does it just convert automatically? And what about existing FR points? Do they have the new 60 day expiration?
BTW, why are there now 2 programs then? Why didn't they just convert all the existing accounts to the new program?

You have to convert manually or everything will expire in 30 days in your GO account. Points converted from Go reward account will have their expiration days extended for another 30 days in either the grocery cash account or gas reward account.

Any existing gas points you have will retain their original expiration date. Once you earn new GO points, you have 30 days to convert them to gas (or grocery) points and another 30 days to use them once converted. You don't have to do anything on the FR side.

I can imagine that someone who earns a couple hundred points per month might not want the hassle of having to remember to convert them. Plus people hate change. They're probably just giving people time to get used to this new idea before forcing everyone to switch.

Points still aren't automatically posting in PA as of this morning. At least, their system to add them manually is once again working.

So once I change my S&S or Giant account to GO, and I then buy the points earning gift cards on promotion, do I automatically have fuel points to use? But I can then "convert" them to extend them another 30 days? And do I then want to remember to do it on the last day to get the maximum duration? Sounds useful, and yet another silly financial machination that I have to remember to do.

Points earned go into your Go Rewards account. You then have 30 days to redeem them as grocery rewards or move them to Fuel Rewards. Once you move them to grocery/fuel, you have another 30 days to use them.

Was told by customer care that points from PA didn't post because I didn't spend $25 on top of the MGCs. This is FALSE.

Data points above corroborate, and I ran an experiment -

I ran $500 at a store, no points.
Then, I ran another transaction $500+39 in grocery => 39 points

This annoys me because phone support basically told me to pound sand and they're not honoring the deal. They also did the ol' "transfer you to a supervisor, and drop the call" gag. I called one more time and was promised they wouldn't do it again => this time, transferred to the menu system. Recourse? Maybe just skip this deal, or go smaller and get local store to add points. Unfortunately, my store had a broken "add points manually" system.

Was it the customer care in store that said something about not spending $25? There have been a lot of new, younger CSRs at the stores I go to, so it's possible they got it confused with the "Buy X of these items, get Y points" promos.

I have had to call online phone support for at least a half dozen purchases over the past 2 Happy card promos for points that didn't post and got them added every time. The only one that required a second call was for a $5000 purchase at 10x points. I did get sent back to the queue once, but otherwise the agents have seemed pretty helpful. I'm also not sure it was malicious since they are working from home as opposed to from a call center and have a slightly different set-up, so mistakes could happen. The wait times on hold can be pretty brutal though, so I understand not wanting to call a 3rd time.

I guess it depends how much complaining you want to do, but you should be able to get the points if it is advertised, which it is.

Boo!!!! Regardless, thank you so much for posting, as it's helpful for planning purposes.

On an aside, MC points did not automatically post in PA this morning, once again.

Did you find a Giant ad that has "Flexible points" instead of "Choice points"?

The Giant-MD and S&S ads don't seem to show up nearly as soon as the Giant-PA

The in-store folk are great, but they get nervous about adding 10k points. I've also been told they can get clawed back if they add too many, which I might have experienced once. Unclear.

This was with phone agents, and the one seemed to have some whispering over her shoulder, so I'm not sure it was at home. Regardless, they appear to have a customer management system and it might say not nice things about me? Anyway, I've repeatedly had poor experiences with customer care phone support (and I'm not lousy at talking with people). 10k points is $100 grocery, or maybe $225 in gas if you max it out in gas, so I was inclined to set it straight, but spending an hour at a time seems a waste. If I call, I might call "first thing" (8a) to try to avoid the long wait times. TBH, they probably won this one.

My lesson: go small enough on first round and make sure that store can add the points before maxing 5k. The VGCs are so much easier to unload so I'll just get enough gas points to hold me over, and wait for the VGCs.
