The thread for 2018 is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Giant MD and Stop & Shop's points now stack with Shell's Fuel Rewards. See more here.
If you link a Mastercard to Fuel Rewards, you will earn an additional $0.15/gal for every $100 spent on anything at Giant/S&S with that card through the end of the year.

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behaviour if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

I'm trying to think what could actually happen: could the cashier hit a button to stop your fuel pump?
I've done it a couple of times, wife parks one side of island and I park at other, fill hers first, then fill my own car. Never had an issue.

However that was before I got a bunch of fuel cans.
Its been a good while since I could be bothered with this approach, especially as we are now in the 20gl/$1.50max era at S&S

In PA it might make more sense.

To the contrary.....I asked some question one time at an actual Stop & Shop gas station. I don't even remember what I asked. Then I went to fill my car. The attendant came running out to tell me "you could just bring some gas cans to get more gas. I have one guy who comes with his wife in another car and son in his car every week". So unlikely they're going to be "company man" and shut you down. That was back in the $2/36 gallon times. I've brought cans to probably 10 different S&S and Shell stations and never had a problem. I do anticipate it, however and make sure that first I fill the car, then I start pulling out gas cans.

Thanks, I've always assumed it was language that was unlikely to actually be enforced. But, I agree, it's best to be as discrete as you can. The worst idea would be to walk into the store and ask the cashier whether you can do it.

You can get 4 fill ups per day in nothing but cans, or you can put some in your car, and the rest in cans.

As many as I need, up to 20.
Boats, cars, trucks, 4 wheelers, motorcycles, generators, & cans for the same.

Is that at Giant of PA? The Giant Landover and Stop & Shop deals wouldn't seem lucrative enough for that game.

The recent AMEX deal at Giant of PA seemed TOO lucrative -- if you had a way of getting rid of multiple AMEX GCs. Buying one $500 GC for 25 gallons of totally free gas -- with 2 months to use it -- was a crazy good deal.

Yes, PA

As long as I am saving money, coming out ahead... I will always take cheaper gas when I can because I have so many tanks to fill. I forgot to mention generators and other things. The savings would still be huge for just a little extra work pouring cans in some of the tanks. Since a lot of them require pouring cans anyway, it's not a big deal for me to pour some more.

It does make me wonder why there was still a stack of AMEX GCs in the Giant of PA store I visited last Thursday (the last day of the promo). You didn't need to be a sophisticated MS expert to realize "Hmmm, maybe I should buy a couple of these cards for completely free gas." You could just use the GCs as your credit card for a few weeks. Heck, there can be a buck off cereal sale and the store is cleared out. I guess GCs and gas points aren't as easy for most folks to understand.

I'd wager it has more to do with the float. Most folks can float a few dollars worth of cereal, but a couple hundred (or thousand) of gift cards? Not so much

You may be right. The numbers are crazy about how little cash Americans have "lying around." We're a rich country where everyone lives paycheck to paycheck.

Agreed. Not to get too sidetracked, but it is pretty crazy how little cash people have in an emergency. Now I'm not saying put on your tin foil hats and stockpile gold in the bunker, but c'mon people - try to have some savings, right?

Before I get crucified, totally understand that some have it tougher than others. Generally speaking, I think the average person could stand to have a bit more in savings, or at least something remotely liquid, like a CD.

Wonder if VISA GCs will work.

I got it on my Giant Card. Wonder how it stacks on normal gift cards that are already 4x. Nearest Giant for me is a 93-Mile round trip. Worth it for the normal Visa promotions for free gas, but a bit far to "take one for the team" and try it out.
