Customer rep mentioned the closure is due to "Business Activities", and that I have to visit a branch for a possible resolution....but a Citi branch is a couple states away...however I'am willing to visit one if there is any hope...

yeah, it was the same 'reason' for me as well - 'business activities', however in my case I didn't use my checking at all - no deposits, no debit usage. It seems that this is a standard reason for Citi.

I also couldn't close myself a checking account - as soon as I got a letter I called Citi to cancel (wanted to do it anyway before closure), but CSR told me that account is already in 'closing state' and would be fully closed 3 weeks later.

Thanks for the information man. I just opened the citigold checking accnt for the bonus. Ill stay away from MO deposits.

I have been buying Giftcards from gas stations and paying using Walmart BP.
But less in volume around 2000 / 3000 per month. Lets hope i am under the radar

I'm sorry to be joining the Citi checking shutdown party as well. No reason given but I did deposit some MO three months ago. Kept a nice balance and was Citigold but happened anyway. No reason given in the letter other than just because we can.

Weird. I opened Citigold and a standard Citi Checking account 8 months ago. I started depositing about 4k in MO per account for like 3-4 months straight. Then I stopped. Accounts are still opened. I haven't deposit MO to those accounts for about 4 months. I guess it's a good thing that I stopped.

I opened a Union Bank checking with 4k in MO. It was put on like a 1 month hold or something. The next month I deposit 4k in MO. Got a letter in the mail saying that they are going to close my account.

FYI: for Citi and Union Bank, I deposit inside the branch, not by ATM or mobile.

<<For those who went through this with Citi, is this a lifetime ban/ blacklist for all Citi products including CC?>>
They will not say anything, but you will know as you will see no marketing mail offers from Citi. You can also try checking Citi CC pre-qualified tool.

<<Are CC accounts destined to be closed as well?.... Have around 100k TYP sitting around.>>
One OP's bank account was closed, then he applied for CC which was approved first and later denied on activation. Within a month, all other CC are closed. One case cannot be generalized, but play safe by not asking for any additional credit limit from Citi. Transfer any TYP points to partner program. Point already in partner programs like AA, Hilton, etc. are safe.

<<Any negative remarks reported to ChexSystems?>>
If you close your account before citi closer, you will not see any -ve remark on Checksystem or Earlywarning system.

Once they send you closer letter, nobody can make them to reconsider your case. Try Bank Branch Manager, Back office, Social Media, Executive office, etc. All efforts will be in vain.

Sit tight and play safe.

Do the points from the final statement's purchases post to the account? Time to transfer?

My citi checking account was closed on Feb 2015. After that, all my citi credit cards were closed on Sep 2015. I did deposit MOs and pay citi cards with MOs. The letter from Citi didn't mention any detail why they closed my credit cards. I hope I am not on their black list :(

Anyone have experience with getting funds back from Citi checking account after closure? Account closed and told they aren't returning funds as they can't confirm source.

Account opened in September, funded with credit card. Withdrew 95% of initial deposit via a few bill payments, one small ATM withdrawal, and a large check to spouse. Also had a transfer ach transfer to savings account at another bank that was reversed by that bank due to name mismatch.

Can only assume the reversed transfer and the large check are the reason for closure, but of course they won't tell you anything.

File a CFPB complaint. They can't just keep your money.

It's a term used outside of just the manufactured spending community to mean Automated Clearing House, the method by which a person is able to transfer money between banks. It is usually (although not always) free to perform, but it takes at least a few business days. Contrast wire transferring funds which is usually same day or next day, but that often costs quite a bit.

I did not receive any letter regarding closure in advance. Only received a letter after I had called and it that it just said account was closed. No mention of funds.
