You could get away with a few times saying you're trying to avoid the ATM fees but after that people are going to start taking notice because cashiers are going to have to start getting their drawers refilled more frequently.
Indeed it's cumbersome. Typically these stores have a max $60-$100 max cash back per transaction so you would have make 5 or more purchases. I'd rather head over to the MO counter.

Where could you get $499 cashback at the register even once?

For general knowledge
That would be good to know, however practically would you ever use it?
For the record I don't know for sure but for some reason Costco stands out in my mind

If a store gave cashbacks like that, I'd be happy to make real purchases of 50 or 100 dollars and then cash out the rest. But I highly doubt places would like you to empty their registers of cash.

someone might have to try out Costco and see what their limit is... but from what I gather most all places have a limit of $100/transaction (if they even have that much cash in the register that isnt $1 or $5 bills -- they are def not gonna clean out their register for you to do multiple CB transactions at a time -- unless they are your best friends.)

I do remember back in the day some places had $200 limits, but pretty sure those days are over fwiw.

Considering it says you can't do it and ATMs charge a fee for withdrawal, what is the point in paying ~ $1-3 to dump $500? I guess for the x% of people who have no access to money orders.

Contest to see who'll get the most PMs?

Same reason someone charges a GC when it says not eligible for rewards.

I can be your ATM. Give me the card, and I'll give you $475 back. I'll pocket a 5% cash back fee.

Would you be able to pay for chips at the casino with these cards and later change the chips back into cash?

Not to mention that most cash registers are hard coded not to allow more than $100 cash back in any given transaction.

Isn't online gambling illegal?

I think the legality depends on which state you are in.
