Merchant classification codes

Do they ring up as "food store" or "general merchandise" on cards?

Depends. Test your card and find out.

You can also use Visa supplier database: https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/search/index.jsp

But as mentioned, the best way is to make a small test purchase.

Neighborhood Market is a special Walmart store that's smaller and carries groceries only. Typically close to residential areas as well.

My area has one, but I don't think it has a kate. Are people finding GCs there?

WM giftcard

All neighborhood markets I have checked are coded as grocery stores. I bought a sizable WM GC to use for gas and general WM purchases. (Sam's Club has the cheapest and most convenient gas on my commute. I.E. I get the same CB on gas as grocery, but don't use my card for small purchases.)
AFAIK they have the same policies as any other Walmart so I wouldn't expect to be able to buy any debit GC, but feel free to give it a try

I've never been to a Neighborhood Market, the closest one is about 10-15 miles away (regular Walmarts are all around me). What does the NM Walmart have that can I can take advantage of with a grocery bonus credit card? If it's just Visa gift cards, I can get that at CVS or any grocery store.

I agree that Amex codes neighborhood as grocery. However, they do not code Super Walmarts as such.

For the most part I have had 100% success at Super Walmarts and Neighborhood WMs coding as grocery on my Visa and Mastercards. The Visa Supplier link listed above is a great resource for checking. I heard that sometimes Super WM vary based on which register you use. In this case, the Visa link will sometimes list two MCC codes. Yet I have no personally seen them and I check out wherever the line is shortest.

visa merchant codes?

I did a search and didn't find anything unless it's buried deep in one of the threads.

I've got 2 Targets that are not coded as a grocery store with Visa. They used to NOT have a full grocery, but probably in the last year or two added a full grocery.

I've got a Walmart that is in the process of becoming a Super Center I'm not sure if it will be eventually coded as a grocery store.

Is there anything we can do as consumers either to visa or Target/Walmart to have them be changed as a grocery store so I can do my MS at Target/Walmart?

thanks.

No. Tier 3 data might get reported, but Target and Walmart will never be coded as a Grocery Store because, despite selling Groceries, that is not their primary function.

My experience differs. I have some Targets and neighborhood Walmarts coded as grocery for Visa. The neighborhood Walmarts also code as grocery for Amex.

All 4 walmarts near my house are coded as grocery stores for Visa/MC 4 out of 5 Target stores are also code as grocery stores for Visa/MC. I usually walk 15 minutes to the nearest Target to load AFT and RedBird , stop by some restaurants, and walk back to my office during lunch break.

However, AMEX treat all Walmarts & Targets as warehouse and not grocery stores. I only use AMEX gift cards at Walmart/Target but not old Blue or BCP.

Not so in all cases. I have 2 neighborhood Walmarts that are coded as grocery store for Amex and I enjoy the 5-6% bonus on every trxn.
