Starting February 1st, it limits the purchase of "open-loop" gift cards using a credit card to $2k per day. For purchases over $2k, it will now be cash only. However some of my Kroger employees are misinterpreting it to mean that it is cash only for all gift card purchases. I'll cross that bridge with the manager when we get there. There is also language in the memo that implies that the registers will be updated to disallow credit cards for purchases over $2k (although I don't have confidence in their implementation of this).

The memo looks to be targeted to a "region", although I'm not sure how big the region is. I'm located in DFW.

For a long time mine has been purchase at service counter for anything 2k and above. If Amex is asking for this it's probably linked to OBC.

I can't answer either of your questions, but check your digital coupons online or on the app... I saw one the other day for 50cents off a BP exp 2/28. YMMV

I saw this coupon too but for the life of me I couldn't get it to load via the link on the banner nor could I find it amongst the digital coupons online. Anyone have a direct link?

Edit to add:
Found It:

Here in the PNW we seem to be the canary in the coal mine for Kroger. Today all QFC got "the memo" to no longer accept prepaids for MOs. Fred Meyer died in December so this pretty much kills off Kroger liquidation in the PNW at most Kroger. The memo also said that Kroger was working on a hard code to deny prepaid debit at the register for money services. :(

bummer. didn't realize any QFCs would even let you do MOs anymore. was thinking it was only FMs, which, yes, died in december. sad times up here right now. at least the $2k/day still exists for buying. if that died...:td:

BTW: if it's "region-only", it's a pretty big region based on this thread (detroit, PNW, DFW)...

They've never worked in self checkout, otherwise we'd all be running through self checkout instead of having to deal with CSRs.

I have purchased them in self checkout before, with assistance from CSR to put the amount.

The CSR said it's a new policy cash or check only.

I bought 2 VGCs yesterday at self checkout with no issue. CSR asked me the amounts, punched them in, paid with CC, off I go. I'm in OH

I'll try again at the regular checkout lane or at another location. I hope they just misunderstood the new policy, if there is one here in MI.

I thought about this yesterday, when they say 'open-loop'... are they talking about the prepaid RELOADABLE debit cards? VGC, MCGC are closed as you can't re-load.

but you can use them anywhere

Aren't the $200 vgc's from BB open loops? They're not reloadable.

Correction- I was wrong. I just assumed open vs closed was reloadable vs non reloadable... silly me :td:

People are definitely ready for Armageddon here in VA, main rack of VGCs at Kroger was cleaned out. I've never seen that at this location before. Fortunately there was another smaller rack around the corner by the front door.

Been shopping at local KR for years, lots of friendly cashiers see me purchasing 4k at a time, none bat an eye.

Soooooo naturally I have the memo in-hand (if anyone could tutor me in how to post as a .PDF please pm). A few things:
1 - "GPR" reloadable cards refer to the Green Dot Money Pack's that are truly reloadable. These have always been cash/check only at Kr0ger. The memo even states "no change to current practice"
2 - "Open-Loop" reloadable cards refer to all Visa/Mastercard denominations $25, $50, $100 and variable load. Transactions OVER 2k of open-loop cards (including fees) must be paid for with cash/check.
3 - "In 2015 a Point-of-Sale hard decline will be put into place to assist the store associates with these process changes." -- CVS style I'm assuming

There is no effective date on the memo itself so all the Feb 1st nonsense is just that. So until the hard-decline hits this is YMMV...then it drops to THREE variable loads per transaction.

Hope this helps.
