Kroger Master Thread

Offer valid:April 9-April 22,2014

Self check out machine just spit out this info back to me tonight...

Says Limit one coupon per transaction per day but who is counting....may work with the variable loads as well and nice timing with the 4x fuel points promo thats running right now if you are into the fixed value ones.

This was in Ohio...

Thanks for the HU. They did this last fall and my wife and I got banned from buying GC's at the Kroger nearest our house. Still 2 others in town that I frequent. Now to decide how hard to push it because I do not want to get shut out of anymore stores in town...hahaha.

Care to share amount you bought and over how many days or weeks?....Was it triggered by DL tracking or just by being familiar to them as the weird guy who buys a lot of VGC :p?

I always wonder if this will happen to me since they scan my DL every time I buy VGC...

MauiKauaiOahu Mar 29, 2014 11:42 pm

I got one today in Utah at Smiths(Kroger owned)

slickpokerdealer Mar 30, 2014 12:13 am

Any idea when the $5 coupon will expire?

I second this request - both the amount and the method. I'm always wary of them scanning my DL, and I feel like it's going to be happening more often with the demise of beans at CVS. I don't want to cause any problems at what is actually my primary grocery store.

Thanks.. Will max out BB for April if coupons are issued for VGCs as well.. Hopefully..

adminds Mar 30, 2014 7:37 am

Option 1: buy 2 variable VGC & load $500 each, net costs: 5.95*2-5=6.9
Option 2: buy 2 fixed VGC of $100, get 800 feul points, net costs: 5.95*2-5-0.8*15=-5.1

2 is better

HikerT Mar 30, 2014 11:22 am

Add spend benefits (e.g. 5% at grocery) and time invested (5x factor) and option 1 is better. To equalize spend you need to check out 5x as many times. Include time for the cashier to enter your DL 5x as many times and time to cash out 5x as many VGCs. Not to mention 5x potential for fraud alert for swiping your CC 5x as many times. And then the time to dump 5x as many $5 coupons. There are better options to generate fuel points from a time invested standpoint IMHO.

Its been awhile, but it was definitely the DL scan....the stores get a printout showing who bought how much apparently. I think we bought around 40-50k in about 1 week before shutdown at that store:D. No problems with other stores, still buying but have not went crazy and space it out now

So it's (seemingly) on a per-store basis, then? I pass a half dozen every day, so that makes things easier.

Of course, I'm nowhere near your level anyway. That's pretty impressive.

Did they ban you because they visually saw that you were buying a bunch or because they tracked your purchases on your Kroger card?

If you're buying the variable VGCs, there's no reason to scan your Kroger card. You don't get any rewards. His ban seems to have come from their DL scans.

So does this mean - do we have to buy a VGC now to get a coupon that will be valid from 04/09-04/22? or can we just buy 2 VGCs from 04/09-04/22 and it will apply the coupon automatically?

GC's purchased between 4/9-4/22. The coupon will be for $5 off a future purchase, but cannot be used for GC's, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.

It was the DL scan, apparently we showed up on their printout and the unusually high amounts got the mgr's attn.

What did you get? Was it a $5 coupon or just the notice of the up coming promotion?

What's the GC trigger level at Kroger for the scan?

I believe its more than $75....you can always test it using the self check out machines.

Wait a minute.. With Variable GCs, we save a dollar when compared to buying VRs.. $6.9 fee for $1000 factoring the $5 coupon as real cash which not really is since Kroger's prices are 20% more than Walmart or Costco and that compensates the $1 savings.. I guess I am gonna pass.. Yeah, CVS is dead but thats not end of world..

Kroger does run decent sales on certain items and is where we buy most of our meat anyway. There are cc's out there that offer grocery store bonuses, when combined with this become quite lucrative.

Is this deal regional or national? I couldn't find it in the Weekly Ad for my local store

Bought 2x500 VGCs today and no coupon in DFW. So I'm not sure. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

The same in Indiana.

Do we need to scan our shopper card to get the coupon?

BigB985 Apr 9, 2014 2:30 pm

Variable Cards do not qualify. I tried them this morning and then read the terms and they don't qualify according to the flyer in the store.

On another note I have done 2 other transactions with 2x $100 Visa GC with the same shopper card at the same location and received a $5 off next purchase coupon each time.

A question I have is will I be able to use both these $5 off coupons on one transaction? Or will I have to split the 2 coupons up over 2 transactions? Thanks for any help.

flyertalk77 Apr 9, 2014 2:33 pm

The in-store ad says the variable cards are excluded from this deal. So the next best thing is the $100 Visa/MC.

This deal doesn't scale unless you need a lot of gas/grocery next two months. Or you're in an area where $2off/gallon is allowed.

I did buy a couple of $100 Visas since you earn 4x fuel pts on those as well. The $5 Catalina coupon I received has the expiration date of 4/23 so about 2 weeks from the time of purchase.

jan_believes Apr 9, 2014 4:58 pm

Aww, this is too bad

When I first read the thread title, I thought something like, "time to go ahead and make my DD an authorized user on my 5% bonus CC".

But, if the variable card doesn't qualify, and the highest GC denomination is $100, um, thatsa not good.

2 x $100 GCs + $11.90 = 211.90 - 5% ($10.60) just to receive a $5 catalina good on future purchase seems like an investment with a paltry result. Unless, of course, you shop at Kroger regularly and they double coupons or something.

Just read previous post about fuel points included. Really? Well, then maybe the result gets a better grade that I first thought.

At least, regular Kroger shoppers can plan their fuel points for the proposed gas cost increase.

I don't know the answer to your question. Seems like it would be nice to have both honored at one time. But, I did want to say:

Welcome to Flyertalk! :)

The average cost of unleaded for the US is already $3.58/gal... (source: gasbuddy.com)

Thank you! I just got a few new credit cards and stumbled across here doing some research. Very informative posts and information in this forum :)

trippinbilly Apr 9, 2014 5:18 pm

If its a Catalina then there should be no problem using in one transaction. I used to do a lot of couponing, until I realized how much more lucrative this is. I kind of chuckle when I see the people with the binders of coupons, as that was me 4 years ago.

trippinbilly Apr 9, 2014 5:19 pm

Kroger fuel points can be used at Shell but I think its limited to 10 cents a gallon.

The price of gas is irrelevant to the value of fuel points as they offer a flat $1 off per gallon and not a percentage off. All that matters is how many gallons you buy. Whether gas is at $2 or $5 per gallon, you still save $1 per gallon.

I only wish there was Kroger gas near me.

They are Catalina's that print out at the register after you pay. Thanks for the input. Looking forward to stacking several :D

Only $5 of your next purchase? I'll pass.

You'll get $10 of your next purchase at Vons. The promotion runs 03/26/14 - 04/22/14.

Does it say 1 per customer or per transaction on the terms of the coupon? In that case, it will be slightly tough to convince the cashier.. Never tried coupons on self checkout kiosk..
