FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: CWAL
A new thread was created for the new year in 2017. This is the old thread. For the 2017 on this topic, go here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1819562-cvs-master-thread-2017-a.html

CVS is cash only for all Incomm-related reloads and reloadable cards, including Vanilla Reloads and Serve swipe reloads. See memo to stores for complete list. Other cards at CVS can still be bought using credit, but YMMV depending on location, Manager, etc.

New limits rolling out starting 10/20:
Transactions with $300 or more of card face value require ID.
Limit $2000 of card face value per 24 hour rolling period.
Limit of 10 cards per 24 hours.
Cashback posted in 48 hours.

Cash Register Freezing
Multiple reports that the CVS cash register will freeze and lock after scanning the ID when purchasing multiple prepaid cards. Then the register's computer needs to be restarted. Some report that "swiping" the ID instead of "scanning" will avoid the issue.

Limit of 7 tenders (swipes) per transaction. This is most commonly run into when using low-value AGCs. After seven, the transaction must be complete, no cash (or any other payment method) will be accepted to pay the balance.

Yeah, haven't been checked for $500 GC purchase the past few days. Kicks in at $1k as others are reporting.

Even though it's already a known thing, I was able to purchase another GC ($50 in this case. I bought a small value card to test its use at another store.) after hitting the $2k limit with the same card that I had used to hit the $2k limit. Did this at a different store, not that that matters.

As I said, this is already a known thing, just reiterating it.

Anybody test the $2k limits at stores that require ID only after $1k?
I'm hoping since it has the old swipe ID threshold, that it may still have the old daily limit.

I'll try this evening after work.

For my last couple of visits to my usual store, the register keeps freezing after the second card is scanned. Here's what happens. First card is scanned, the $500 value pops up on the screen, then the $3.95 activation fee pops up. Then the cashier scans the second card. Then scans my ID. the $500 value pops up. But before the $3.95 activation fee on the second card comes up, the whole system freezes. Anyone else encounter this?

This is for purchases of PPMC cards. Haven't tried any other types of cards.

Many people got shut down from AMEX since 10/22/14 (black Tuesday). Have CVS used Level 3 for OV since 10/20/14? If CVS uses Level 3, AMEX will know what we buy and will shut down our cards for MS.
Does anyone still use AMEX to buy OV at CVS since 10/22/14?

If you actually read that thread you would know that purchases at CVS were not a defining factor. Even if CVS does give level 3 (which I doubt), there were people who bought that didnt get shut down, and people that didnt buy that did get shut down. If they were going to shut down all MS, we wouldve heard about other cards being shut down, and not just the OBC.

+1. Also, FWIW, i do not get L3 detail on my OBC statement for transactions at CVS. I have seen L3 detail on other cards at other stores. My guess is that we may never see L3 at pharmacies, because it might violate privacy (HIPAA and/or privacy provisions in ACA).

the PPMC is 3.95 everywhere that I have ever seen (unless theres a promo somewhere to waive or reduce it). The OVs are still 4.95...

I have not had any issues. I bought 3x with an AGC yesterday and only license scan after $1k and all went through. May be regional.

I have been not been able to purchase any gift cards at any outlet - CVS, other drug stores, grocery stores - using an Amex GC. Is an "AGC" an Amex GC?
