You did it wrong.. should have bought something on points/miles earning AMEX card and have it go back to BB.

Except that "and have it go back to BB" doesn't work.
Heard from atleast 3 separate people who had their money stuck in limbo because BB rejected the incoming refund OR because BB put their account into lockdown.

Obviously, I'd love to be proven wrong.

Right. You cannot load a BB directly from Costco or any other merchant.
You can ask for a Store Card or credit a non points earning card, then call the CC company to ask for a check for the credit showing....
