Following this thread I have just tried booking Amanpuri for Xmas 2010 - already booked out! They have offered to waitlist but am not keen on this option (I like to have my bookings sorted well in advance out of preference). I must say I had planned to book Banyan Tree 'til I read all your comments re shabby villas and poor service. Have read all previous threads re raves/ rants but not sure whether places like Sarojin are very "honeymoony". Will be travelling with 11 year old son as well as husband and don't want to be surrounded by loved-up couples, but do NOT fancy the JW Mariott type of hotel. I haven't been to Phuket for 20 years, so I need help from you. What would all you Phuket luxury specialists suggest?

I stayed in a double pool villa at the Banyan Tree in July and had a fabulous time. The attention to detail was amazing and service was great. I'd only recommend the double pool villa with the daily surprises etc.

After that I moved to Amanpuri staying first in a pavilion. I was miserable until I moved to a villa. I did convey my misery to the front desk of Amanpuri for the first 2 days but they just smiled and didn't do anything. Eventually I spoke to management and then I experienced the legendary Aman service.

The SALA Phuket in Mai Khao is a boutique resort that's luxurious yet unpretentious. Modern, minimalist style...definitely worth considering.

Lucky you - Trisara is my ultimate favourite in Phuket. It gets better every time I return. Don't forget to check out the spa. You very rarely hear much about it, but it is one of the best in Thailand - fabulous spa suites and very good treatments (chemical-free, too).

What other options for luxury hotels in Phuket? Trying to book 2010 Christmas, but Sala, Trisara and Amanpuri are supposedly unavailable. Looking for a intimidate luxury hotel, not a larger one like the JW. I would also be open to other luxury hotels on a beach in Thailand that would be recommended. I am looking to spend approximately 7 nights, but I thought Phuket would provide a great base for trips to other islands (Phi Phi, etc)
