So much depends on the location, but the usual suspects include the Peninsula, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Island Shangri-la, Conrad, and the Inter-Continental. I'm sure I've left a few out as Hong Kong has a disproportionate number of fine hotels!

I don't think there is much dispute that the 4 best hotels in HK are the Peninsula, the MO, the LMO, and the FS. If you want to make it 5, include the RC, but that's closing, and there could be an argument on whether some other hotels may be as good as the RC.

I don't think these 4 could be rank-ordered with any certainty.

It depends on where you want to be (Hong Kong or Kowloon) and whether a view is important.

The best view from the Kowloon side, looking over the harbour at Hong Kong, is from a Harbourview room at the InterContinental. The suites on the higher floors at the Peninsula are also outstanding.

If you want to be on the Hong Kong side, if a view is not important, consider the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in a L600 suite. The Virtuoso amenities there are outstanding, including not only the usual available upgrade and full breakfast but dinner for two ... and a greeting at the aircraft gate by your personal hotel concierge with escort through customs and limo back to the hotel.

If you want a great view from the Hong Kong side, try the Mandarin Oriental (for a classic Asian feel) or the Four Seasons (for a beautiful contemporary feel right by the water).

I do not agree with the FS which is in my opinion very cold and not o luxurious on the ground floor (reception and the "café" behind. I agree with the other one and I would add Island Shangri la even if the rooms need some renovation. Still a very good hotel with superb service and great restaurants!

We stayed at the Peninsula and thought it was incredible. The airport transfer in the Phantom Rolls Royce was a great added touch. We used Amex Plat. and were upgraded to a corner suite. It had fantastic views of Victoria harbor and surrounding city. Everything about the hotel was superb. Clean, amazing materials, high tech, and a wonderful location. It also has several restuarants, and an amazing spa overlooking the city. The gym and the pool was nice aswell. For me, I rate it above FS George V

Location is a big factor

My comments are limited to the HK side.

I like the Mandarin and the Landmark Mandarin primarily becauseof the location - within walking distance of the airport express and everything in Central. The services and ammenities are roughly the same - the MO has better views I suppose.

I also really like Jia, but not as many people need to stay over in Times Square. I've stayed in their suites and they are fantastic. Might not be up to the Mandarin's level, but if you need to be in Causeway Bay, you can't do better but you could do a lot worse.

I've stayed at the LMO for 4 nights two weeks ago, and while the hotel is amazing in terms of room/service.. there is no view whatsoever. We had a corner suite with lots of windows. However, the windows had to be closed because we were staring directly into the office across the road, which was pretty disappointing...

My favorite so far is the FSH Hong Kong... Unspoiled view of the harbour (no need to bring down the shades).. Service was amazing. We had access to the Club and I can say that was the best Club experience..

I've havent been to the renovated MO yet (will be there for Xmas)... but the view wont be as great as the FSHK.

I stayed at the LMO twice last summer. Great place - wonderful rooms, excellent (and really genuinely caring) service, great intimate feeling, and an amazing spa if that's your thing (it's not mine, though). Overall, I would stay there again anytime I'm in HKG.

We were considering staying in some of the others (for a time we had reservations at the FS, MO, Pen, and LMO for the second trip), so we took a look at them all:
MO - very nice, but big and not as intimate as the LMO. The rooms are more traditional MO and less "zen-style." Mostly, though, it's just bigger and we liked the much more intimate LMO. Plus, they don't have the airport meet-and-greet of the LMO which was a great perk of the former.
Pen - nice, of course, but we didn't want to be in Kowloon, which we realized fully only after we visited it. Some people do really like Kowloon though. The rooms at the Pen were nice but traditional.
FS - I didn't see rooms here, but the public areas were really nice. The problem with it for us, though, was that it is very slightly out of the way of the main part of Central. It's not a big deal as HK is very small, but we still prefered being more in the center at the LMO.

I've stayed at them all and while the LMO, Pen and FS are great hotels in their own right, there is no other hotel in the world like the MO HKG. It's uniqueness and greatness is why everyone should stay there at least once in their life.

As for the Langham in Mong Kok, I agree that is a really neat hotel and I love staying there. But it's not quite in the luxury class as the others mentioned here.

The Four Seasons pool alone is enough to stay there. But the rooms are fantastic as well. They also had shaving kit and full toolthbrush/toothpaste box in the bathroom - though it was an unexpected nice touch.
