Amanpulo - fantastic island, mediocre food
Stayed at Amanpulo.
Loved the island, the facitlities, the service, the individual buggy, the water and the underwater. Fabolous, uncompareable!!!
The only thing we really did not like was the food:
Only the little vietnamese restaurant on the airport side was good.
The other outlets were visually romantic, but foodwise very mediocre indeed - no refined tastes, you feel that everything comes out of the freezer, much items overoiled...
And the prices for fresh fish courses (Hello, we are on an island!!!) were absolutely absurd (around 80 USD for a ordinary grouper-maincourse, around 120 USD for a lobster main course). Did not experience such disaster in all the other Amans we stayed.
So Amanpulo is maybe the best beach resort in the world - beach, building and servicewise. But they really have to change their master chef, their food concept and their fresh-food-pricing!!!

Actually Amankora post very regular and interesting articles and information on their page which I think you (and others) will like.
These two articles were posted quite recently on Amankoras facebook page :
1.Short interview with The Queen mother of Bhutan (funny car feeding bit!)
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp...mZS179EkEdZAKw
2.Newspaper article from Canada

I have had lots of sunshine on Phuket in July (with great rain showers also!).
I wonder will this discounting extend to the Indonesian Amans.

the historical rates are certainly interesting. only amanpuri and sri lanka discounted post tsunami, then sri lanka remained cheap because of security situation.
last summer they did 4th nt free in asia for amex FHR.
the latest properties have done opening discounts.
but apparently aman dropped confirmed upgrades for UK/ICC amex cent. not sure about for US/etc.
IIRC amanpuri has seen the most dramatic rate increases recently. and most aman dont have the same seasonal variance. OTOH amanpuri only added low season a couple years ago. perhaps to raise other seasons higher/faster? interesting they have also returned to 2 categories of garden pavilion.

Compared to my first stay my room looked much better.
The wood on the rooms looked like they had been just replaced, some details in the bathroom were brand new, and the wardrobe area as well.
There is a new beach club with a new pool and restaurant.
The overall impression I had is that the place is in a very good state of maintenance.
In August the place is almost empy, so you have all the facilities for yourself, I had an upgrade in an ocean pavilion with a spectacular location above the cliff at the end of the beach.
The weather, to be honest, was very changeable. You must have a good (long) book and enjoy the company of your travel companion.
With respect to the weather in April, it was sunny most of the time but also very windy, the sea was pretty rough, but on the other side of the island it was great we did some exploration with the Aman boat.
