(with MIA instead of MLA)

Austrian Airlines back in Malta

Noel Grima, Political Editor

Austrian Airlines will be back in Malta after a lapse of six years.

This is the first initiative taken by the new management of Malta International Airport to widen the number of airlines that use MIA, and the first step towards turning MIA into a hub.

...

MIA chief executive officer Peter Bolech said he is "extremely happy and satisfied" that Austrian Airlines will renew its flights to Malta after six years absence. This will compensate for the loss of Swissair.

Vienna Airport is the number one gateway with direct access to Eastern Europe. This should be of great interest to Maltese entrepreneurs.

This, he added, is just the first step towards the realisation of MIA as a hub in the Mediterranean.

He added that MIA is in contact with other airlines who may be attracted to Malta and is presently helping them analyse the advantages of flying to this country.

At the same time, two airlines which fly to Malta have already announced they will be increasing the number of flights. These are British Airways and Emirates.

Air Malta recently announced the successful completion of an open skies agreement with Germany which should increase the number of German tourists to Malta.

Mr Bolech said air transport figures, after 21 straight months of decline, are now registering sustainable increases. October showed a 9.4 per cent increase in passengers and November saw a five per cent increase. The fact that the increases came from the most important markets, such as the UK, Germany, France and Italy, shows that the increase is sustainable and not a one off.

Mr Bolech referred to an editorial in a local paper this week that referred to MIA’s growth potential. MIA is determined to attract new business to Malta and it considers itself to have a very important role in Maltese industry. He said 25 per cent of Malta’s GDP depends on tourism and 95 per cent of tourists use MIA.

Michael Hoeferer, executive vice president and head of airline and terminal services of Vienna International Airport, told the press conference that he is delighted that Austrian Airlines is joining Air Malta on the Vienna route. This will bring more passengers through Vienna Airport, Europe’s foremost hub airport for traffic between West and East Europe.
