AUA seems to have changed this I am now looking at http://www.aua.com/at/deu/Austrian/news/London/ and they claim that electronics such as Laptops, mp3 players are allowed (on all flights apart from London)

LHR T2 status report - Friday (Aug 11) afternoon - LH 4737

Just a quick status report: I was on LH 4737 today (LHR - FRA, scheduled departure time 1755). I arrived at T2 a bit before 1500. At the entrance of T2, there are people checking tickets - but you can get through with your credit card and the statement that you have an e-ticket (even though the guy checking me seemed to initially think that I should not get in there 3 hours before my flight was scheduled to depart, but he reconsidered when I told him I was trying to get on an earlier flight). When entering the terminal, you are also handed a printout of the current security guidelines as well as the infamous see-through plastic bag into which you're supposed to deposit everything that you wish to carry on-board.

Once you're in T2, there are HUGE queues at the Y check-in, moderate queues at C, and 3 - 5 people queuing at F. So, no problems on that front . Turned out changing flights was not an option as the flight preceding the one I was booked on was very full (a bit of a lengthy process to figure that out - the check-in guy sent me to the ticket desk where I was told that no, even if I was prepared to pay the fee for changing the flight, there was no availability, so I went back to F check-in to check in on LH 4737).

On to the security check - that turned out to be a breeze. In fact, in the past 10 years I have very rarely, if at all, been able to make it through LHR T2 security faster than today. All your belongings are checked already, so there is not really all that much to do at security - you put your belt, wallet, passport etc. into the see-through plastic bag handed to you when you entered the terminal, remove your shoes, walk through the thingy, and get a pat-down from an agent (I've received more thorough pat-downs at FRA and MUC - not so much in terms of their efficiency, but in terms of "intrusiveness").

Once you've cleared security, everything is back to normal. You are allowed to take pretty much anything you buy airside on board the airplane - with the exception, apparently, of flights to the US, where no liquids may be carried on board (perfume, booze, etc.).

LH lounges were not particularly full. The flight was delayed by a bit more than one hour. Other than that, everything was pretty normal indeed. Of course, entering an airplane with all the luggage bins closed because nobody has luggage to put there is a bit strange, but we may have to become used to that ...

I'd be interested in similar reports from non-UK airports. Does anyone know if security is now more stringent if you fly to the UK/US (only)?

The flights from LON to FRA, MUC and DUS were pretty much zeroes only today. Only exception being the very last flight to FRA if I remember correctly. Thanks for the report!

Looks like leading German CDU politicians only needed one day to propose a ban of all liquids and a ban of all hand lugagge on all flights.

I propose a ban of idiocy in politics.

Also, "prescription medicine" in many countries in the developing world are prescription free.

These people are idiots and it becomes a sport to inconvenience you in response to the latest "plot".

Uggh. I am flying from FRA to the US tomorrow. I am worried that the German authorities or LH will adopt something worse?

SAS allows only certain items (including electronics) but have to carry it in these plastic bags. Idiots!

They require it where? To be checked?

And I thought they breed that stuff only on a federal level .

I still can't believe that this is happening - very obviously none of these overpaid
security 'experts' who are 'protecting' us came up with the vicious concept that
perpetrators would consider smuggling the explosives on board. Did they
expect them to declare the stuff ?
Why do I feel like being left at the mercy of imbeciles ?

Not that I'd consider flying much without hand luggage anymore.

Terror attacs are a risk, we all have to live with in future.
But not allowing any more handluggage in planes is not the selution.
What is with trains, busses or other places where masses of people come together. Nobody can secure to be save everywhere.
And I see the security really as a serious problem, but I feel more save in a plane on a 12h flight ( including everyones handluggage ), as driving with my car from Aachen to Cologne 1h. on the A4 !!! ( Where every week overtired truckdrives causes accidents and people die ).
Its easy to calculate how is your chance to be hit by an attack like 9/11.
But I think my chances to die somewhere else are much bigger. ( and I also fly every year around 20 longhaul + 40 shorthaul segments.
Not that I argue to be more careless, but there is no 100% security > nowhere !

May be politicians should think about why people do attacs like that.
And not only cants in TV " that these guys are in war with all who love freedom "

Are most flights from LHR to FRA being delayed still...am flying Monday morning and am concerned I will miss my 1 hour connection at FRA. How is LH assisting with missed connections, etc.? Also can you reclaim your luggage at FRA and carry it on with you on your next flight?

You can check using this link or this link (although the information, apparently, is not being updated at this point - it was updated just fine when I checked regularly yesterday).

As my LHR - FRA flight was a bit more than an hour late yesterday, I can relay some recent first-hand experience. There were regular announcements on board, including up-to-date information regarding specific flights prior to landing. People who LH thought would miss their connecting flights had been rebooked, but they were advised to still go to the original gate in case the connecting flight was also delayed. They were further advised that, in that case, they might make the plane but their luggage would likely not and would be delivered to them the next morning (my flight was an evening flight). Finally, they were advised that, if they missed the flight, they could find out at the gate what LH had done in terms of overnight accommodation - in other words, if you miss the last flight, LH will book (and pay) a hotel for you.

Hope this helps, and that you'll have a good flight tomorrow.

Obviously a "near miss" in the Uk and i am glad that these guys were caught. But IMO no reason to overreact. What happens if they find the first terrorist who plans to swallow a bomb before boarding a plane... Will they ban passengers from all commercial flights....

Cheers, S

Hmmmm...... ok..... but surely there must be guinea pig ahead of me.

Re SAS: they have a list of specific items that you may take (incl electronic devices) but must not take a normal bag. Only can use these plastic bags.

Not yet, but I'm speculating you might, in a not so distant future, require seatbelts to be something like "one-way". Meaning that pax will be strapped into their seats before take-off and not be able to open the seatbelts w/o the help of a FA(M). So in order to stand up or go to the bathroom, you will need permission ("hall pass") and get an escort. You certainly won't be allowed to take any toiletries other that those provided by the airline to the bathroom (so the all liquid ban will stay), and your stay in the bathroom will be closely monitored.

Pax will also be scanned for things in their body. So if you had surgery and your body contains anything "artificial" you will run into the same problems as when carrying on a nasal spray or eye-drops. You'll need an official document adressing that. I'm confident they'll find a way to make sure that not just any doctor will be able to issue such a document, it will have to be one who is approved by the TSA or a similar official body. Of course, you will always have the choice not to fly.

And all this is just the beginning. Because of the London plot, several German politicians are now once again pressing to use the military inside the country, to "protect" airports etc.

So an investment in the upcoming IPO of Deutsche Bahn looks suddenly so much brighter. As opposed to investing in anything related to mass air travel. Looks like the "mass" thing has a quite uncertain future, all it needs is another "foiled plot" (aka idea that's never executed), maybe involving clothes or sumthin. In the end, we might only be able to board a plane in special uniforms provided and approved by the TSA. Just think of the huge changing rooms airports will need, especially for a A380! Sounds totally crazy? Well, you know...

Companies developing individual jet air taxi service are already reporting a huge increase of interest. Quite obviously, this is the future of the FF, at least of those who can afford it.
