When do upgrades happen

Being new to LH, I'm not sure when SEN and HON can use their upgrades or when miles can be used. I'm trying to figure out how much company we will have in F. Right now we are the only 2 in F.

I'm on a flight tomorrow on a 744 and there are still 14 empty seats in F and 55 empty seats in C and 93 empty in Y. It is New years day and I thought F and C would be light, but not this light.

Does LH normally wait until day of departure to upgrade Y->C and C->F?

I'm not sure if I would like it if we were the only 2 in F on a 747. Seeing how lightly booked C is, there are very few eligible passengers to upgrade to F.

miles and eVouchers can be used in advance or on the day of departure. with the flight being that light i'd assume it will stay empty in F as LH usually does not upgrade any pax out of goodwill, even SENs and HONs.

I think if there are only 2 of us up top, service will suffer. They may treat it as a day off.

Then again, it could be the best private jet ever.

Usually they are very attentive if it is empty ...
