still you get the best treatment - meaning friendliness from the crew / FA when travelling in Y as a HON. At least my experience so far.

I had more than 160 status-flights last year and just one upgrade from MUC to AOI from Y to C. The funny thing: I dindn't want the upgrade, because in the ATR 42 you better sit in the first row. The forced me to take the upgrade, because all economy has been full. When I'd entered the plane and taken place in the C-compartement, aftre closing the doors the flight att. told me to move to the one remaining seat in the eco cpt. A terrible window seat which I don't like. My aisle-seat in the first row has been given away.
And since Nov. 15, as a LH-HON, I dindn't get any upgrade.

Rare Luck
Reading the thread, I now know that we were extremely lucky.
Flying coach SFO-FRA with my spouse (Senator/Nothing), I asked at SFO about upgrades. The very pleasant Asian check-in agent offered mileage based upgrade options. Of course having forgotten the new mileage redemption, I thought we were only a few short for the 2 of us. WRONG!
I was a few short of ONE upgrade (50,000). [Remember when 100,000 got you a free RT F to Europe from the US.]
Well, we sat in our Y seats until the flight attendant asked my partner about his seat. Then another passenger asked about my seat. We knew that we were in the middle.
The sweetest thing was when I asked about an espresso: only upstairs? Well I got one with compliments!

I had 105K status miles, no upgrades in about 20 LH flights.
Got two from TG (TG658 BKK-ICN and TG659 ICN-BKK), one from CX (CX907 HKG-MNL) and hit the jackpot last night - BKK-HEL on AY from a super cheap O class student fare. A nice start for the year

100 status flights and 5 upgrades.
FRA-MIA
FRA-IAD
FRA-SIN
SIN-FRA
FRA-BKK
All of them were from C to F and because of overbooked Y.
It seems easier to be upgraded in FRA than other.

70 flights (150k miles) - upgraded only twice on FRA-TLV and back (Y tickets). I asked once LH crew what's the upgrading policy. Only if the economy is overbooked and there are places in the business then they do it. Particularly TLV-FRA line is almost always 100% booked.
Flying on UA inside the states and being SEN anyone got upgraded?

Don't hate me because I'm lucky
Paid trips aside, I took only one award trip on LH metal last year in Y, LAX-FRA-JNB.
Although, LH states they NEVER upgrade on award tickets, as a Senator, I was upgraded LAX-FRA and JNB-FRA. For my ex-FRA flights, the lounge fraus grimaced at my questioning an upgrade.
I was worried about actually sitting in Y for back to back long hauls and my upgrade angels were looking out for me!

LH422 FRA BOS first week of January :-:
was on a VKXANE fare, UA Star Gold. Had no seat assignment at ticketing, got a middle seat assignment at check-in. After I asked for an aisle seat, the check in agent told me I should recheck at the gate. Result: Nice 1D seat in C.
Cheers
