M&M Gold credit card can't be renewed in Italy without being an account holder

As a Belgian resident I have a German M+M MC in the absence of a Belgian one.
When I applied several years ago I did have an account at a different German bank and this was accepted but I have to use it as a debit card as my credit allowance is zero, not having an income in Germany.
I therefore ensure that there is enough positive balance on the card to cover my (minimal) spend as I use the Belgian Amex wherever possible, especially as it awards three times the number of miles: 1.5 vs 0.5 per EUR spend plus an annual bonus if one uses it enough.
However there are still many merchants both in Belgium and elsewhere that do not accept Amex due to their higher fees, although as mentioned above its coverage is slowly growing.
