Lufthansa 747-400 vs. Delta A330-300
My family is going on a trip to Italy with this summer. Flying from DTW to Rome and home from Italy. We plan on flying first/business class. I have narrowed it down to the following for basically the same price:
1. Delta on the A330-300 or A330-200, or
2. Lufthansa on the 747-400 in Business Class (upstairs seems like it would be fun).
I appreciate your thoughts.

The space is not so terribly tight, depending on the exact location of your seat (there are some small differences) and the size of your feet. The main complaint is often that the space for the feet is only seperated by a vertical barrier from the seat-neighbor, which can be awkward when you sit next to a stranger. Travelling with familily, I would consider this a non-issue.

The bigger issues is that the window pax in LH J have to climb over the aisle pax, where as DL has aisle access for everyone. If you don't care about that then both are similar, but LH has better service overall if you don't mind the more reserved German demeanor. DL A333/2s have reverse herringbone seats with better foot space. LH B744 J lower deck middle seats are have more space than upstairs or on the sides. Check out picks.

I much preferred the LH business class to Delta's, even if you were on the main deck and not upstairs. In fact, the common "con" to LH is that it's paired seating and not direct aisle access, but traveling with the family that will make it easier for you! Upstairs 747 will feel more private, but I didn't think the DL A330 was particularly private either. The LH seats have greater pitch (both are lay flat though) and better service, and DL had more storage and I thought better food.
If they're close in price I'd go for LH.
With a size 12 foot, neither one cramped my foot but I felt like I had slightly more space on LH. It could have been that DL was more narrow at the legs, so it felt more cramped.
