The way I do it is to always call the Kundendienst and cancel it verbally. Then I follow it up with a short, standard cancellation letter. Never had a problem, so far. Obviously, it helps to speak German if you call the call centre, but I and no doubt others can provide you with a short text for the cancellation letter.

As per German law you can cancel and refund completely within 14 days, so if you are too quick, they will refund everything and not credit the miles...
