LAX to Getty Museum

Is there any public transportation to the museum and will it take several hours? I think a taxi is around $40.00 each direction and I would like to find another way. I have the entire day and evening at the airport and have wanted to see this museum for awhile. Also, any good restuarants near the museum. Thanks for any help available.

Welcome to Flyertalk lindam. I am unaware of any public transportation to the museum. Have you considered renting a car? It is such an easy drive from LAX to the Getty. LAX is just off the 405 freeway. Take 405 North and get off at Getty Center Drive. Depending on the time of day, will take from 25-45 minutes. There is a very nice restaurant in the museum offering lunch and dinner. The food is quite good and the view is spectactular. Also, there is another area for light dining outdoors. (salads, sandwiches, etc). Another nearby restaurant is the Bel Air Bar and Grill on Sepulveda Blvd. Getty is well worth a visit. Good luck.

Here is a link to the Los Angeles Mass Transit Authority's page

http://www.mta.net/

If you enter "LAX" and "Getty" in the route finder, it will display your transit options. There are many dining options in the nearby areas of Brentwood and Westwood.

You may be best off renting a compact car for $25 or so and parking at the Getty which is $5. Much cheaper than a taxi. Much less hassle than the MTA.

Ditto what the others said - get a cheap rental car. Easier & less hassle.

Eat at the 'nice' restaurant at the Getty (it's above the cafeteria). It's only $1-2/more than the cafeteria prices, but great views, service, food - and you're not in the busy cafeteria environment.

There are a few eating options at the Getty; I wouldn't bother going off-site.

Enjoy it - and if you get a sunny day, the views are fab (in addition to the art) - Catalina Island to downtown LA. Cheers.

If you don't drive, one option is to call super shuttle, prime time or other shuttle service companies. They are less exepensive than taxi and you don't have to worry about the freeway.

Don't take public transportation. The stress of dealing LA's MTA is just not worth it.

Please make life easier on yourself and rent a car. The 405 is just horrible also. What should be no more than a 15 min drive often turns into a 1.5 hour drive.

The Getty is a great museum, but you may also want to consider the Norton Simon. He was considered the better collector. See This Link

Cheers,

Z

Public Transportation

I did take a public bus to the museum when I last visited LA. It was an easy ride with no hassles, altho the convenience of having a car is certainly a big plus.

The last time I was in LA I rented a weekend car from Enterprise for $9.99/day and went to the Getty, the Norton etc. A very nice deal. I believe you do NOT need to make advance parking reservations at the Getty now.

Although parking reservations are not necessary, it is generally necessary to make a reservation for the restaurant.

Getty Villa

a $275 million renovation of the original hilltop J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Villa in Malibu pays homage to Getty's collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities.

Indeed, plus It would take awhile (waste of time) to take public tranportation.

You'll love the Getty BTW, well worth the day trip.

I live about 5 minutes from the Getty and I have to admit that the views from the Getty as well as the building is amazing; however, the Norton Simon is the better museum if you wanted to see a better art collection (at least in my opinion).

Public transportation is difficult in LA and very time consuming. I would suggest renting a car or using one of the two shuttle services from LAX -- either the Supershuttle or Prime Time. It should cost about $25 each way. Good luck!
