NYNY
Booked at the NYNY on January 25 for four nights. Anyone have experience trying to score an upgrade with a $20 tip at check in? Since its the week between the NFL Conference championships and the Super Bowl, I am guessing that bookings could be pretty light and they may be more accomodating.

What type of room did you book?
What do you want to be upgraded to?
Have you looked at frontdesktip.com? They have stats there for each hotel...
Mid-week in January increases the chances, but there is still luck and skill involved (like lots of other activities in LV)...

Some ways I've found to increase your odds of a $20 tip resulting in a nicer room : Avoid the guys in suits, pick young girls if possible, have a specific room request in mind, and if they try but fail to secure an upgrade, let them keep the tip.

I just took a look at that site. Pretty interesting. NYNY seems to have a low hit rate but the sample size is pretty low.

I stay at NYNY about 50% of the time I'm in Vegas (10 times a year or so). Haven't tried the $20 tip (no real need for a better room than the Park Ave room that I normally get by asking), but I've always been asked if I wanted to pay xxx to upgrade to a suite.
I'll actually be in Vegas at that time (23-26) but staying at THEhotel. Not paying for the hotel on this trip, but was surprised that hotels were a bit more than I anticipated.

Do you know where the roller coaster at NYNY hotel? I remember when my cousin & I rode on the roller coaster. Perhaps you can go anywhere if you want go there. I know where I can see roller coaster inside the hotel. I knows there is no roller coaster due to winter time. So it will be restores sometimes in Spring/Summer/Fall, too.

It is, and it's a lot more expensive. Absolutely love THEhotel, but for the purposes of most of my LV trips, as long as the place isn't a dump it's fine for me since I'm there to sleep a few hours a night. Though Mandalay's pool is much better than NYNY.
That being said, best of luck in getting the upgrade at NYNY. I've checked in there 6 times this year according to my records, and in general it's a very professional, by the book, check-in staff. There's normally a manager hanging around the check-in desk pretty closely - moreso than I've seen at other hotels. Part of this might just have to do with the fact that NYNY only has about 8-10 check-in positions, and it always seems like no more than half of them are ever open.
