Compensation for flight delay.

Does KLM provide any compensation for flight delays.
Flight KL1701 AMS-MAD left the gate at 9.18 am and returned at 9.25 am with engine trouble. Passengers got of and where told to wait. Finally transfered to another aircraft and left around 12.30 pm. As a result, my daughter missed her connecting flight MAD-AGP.
During the waiting period very little information was given and all they where offered where a few cookies. Is that the normal procedure for KLM.
As NW fliers we are use to at least a service recovery packet being offered.
She had to buy a new ticket on Spanair as she did not make her flight on time.
Is there a way to recover the extra cost from KLM.
Thanks for any info.

As KLM have a crap network in Spain I would guess they will say that your ticket with them was to Madrid and the responsibility stops once they got you there. How was she flying to her onward connection ? was that also with Spanair ? as for sure KLM will simply say we got you there eventually and you should have bought an open ticket with the carrier you chose to fly you onwards.

I have had KLM offer refreshment vouchers when flights have been delayed, but I think they only offer them once the delay is more than a certain number of hours - maybe your daughter's delay was below that limit.

I take it the connecting flight was on a separate ticket? On a through ticket KLM would have rebooked the onward sector. Travelling on separate tickets any onward connections are the passenger's responsibility. I would not travel on separate tickets without making sure that I have travel insurance which will cover missed connections.

Talking of insurance, I have great difficulty finding annual travel insurance for private individuals (UK residents) that does actually cover missed connections. I've read through the text of some 25 policies over the last few days and they all cover missed departures/delays on originating flight out of the UK (or flight into the UK on the return) but not missed connections or domestic trips in country of destination.
The only exception is Amex (although the terms of the policy are somewhat ambiguous), but with an annual premium of at least GBP149 for two persons compared to less than half on others, it is hardly worth it.
Any suggestions?

I would say that if you have to claim Amex is the best. I am still waiting on a claim for stoeln goods last September with the policy I had lasy year which I am kicking myself for taking as it was 40 cheaper than AMEX

I don't know if you get any compensation but it think it's worth finding out, you can check "KLM's General Conditions of Carriage".
You can find it on the klm-site.

good luck, let me know if it was helpfull.

grts,
