Just a quick question: Do you normally get asked for I.D. when checking in for a intra-European (Schengen) flight (let's say AMS-Germany and vv.) these days?

Thanks.

Absolutely. And depending on your nationality you also need a passport in some cases - even though it's intra-Schengen.

Yes on KLM, however my experience on Alitalia was completely different. VIE-FCO no ID check whatsoever (not at check in neither at boarding). FCO-MXP no ID check at check-in, ID check at boarding

I was not traveling on EU passport that trip

I have the opposite experience on KLM. On several AMS-VIE flights, using e-checkin, I have only been asked for ID once, and in this case, a credit card was enough.

In view of the worldwide situation I say that you should be able to show passport at all points of entry and departure.

Now travelling DFDS !!!! thats a different question isnt it Johan ???

When using e.check-in at AMS, I find that my boarding card is invariably rejected by the scanner at the gate. This usually puzzles the agent, who starts tapping on a screen to check whether my seat assignment has been changed. I then have to point out that I have used self-service check-in, and that he wants to see my ID.

By the way, when registering at a Crown lounge you can show your ID to the lounge agent, who will note the fact in the system. This speeds up boarding.

You must always be in possession of a valid passport or European identity card whenever crossing national borders, even intra-Schengen.

No, on two recent KLM trips to MXP and LIS.

Same on LH; as long as it is intra Schengen, nobody cares...

I still wonder what the 'security' is. So the know that the name on the ticket matches! So what? The terrorists at 9/11 were easy to identify, because they don't care. Seems to me like a nice way to ensure that the ticketrules are enforced in the most stringent way.

Not always.

While I agree LH seldom if ever asks for passport/ID at the gate, KLM on AMS-STR and vice versa always does (in my experience, at least).

First time it happened (at STR flying to AMS), I thought the Netherlands might have gotten kicked out of Schengen.

A friend of mine works for KLM and he told me the normal procedure is checking your ID twice, at check-in and also at boarding.

This doesnt mean that on some days they dont go by the book for various reasons.

Boarding a KLM flight at JNB requires showing your passport four times :

- before checking in.
- at the check-in desk.
- at immigrations.
- at the gate.
