That's funny! It IS a bit like AF in the olden days (80s early 90s) but they (AF) have improved ALOT. Their confreres (et soeurs) chez KLM seemed to have taken up the relay from those bad old days.

True, now they just hide in the galley the whole flight.

I realize this is all subjective, but to me the differences betwen KL and AF are quite obvious; it is not a matter of flight-to-flght variations.

I have flown over a hundred flights in Y on KL, until I stopped a few years ago. I've flown at least ten times on AF. AF is a generally excellent airline with good food and a nice accessible-drinks-cart policy but weak ground services. KL is an absolutely awful airline. The consistently rude and unhappy staff (although they brighten up when serving Dutch passengers), the inedible food and the tired fleet add up to a sad comedown for what was once one of the world's top airlines.

Of course, maybe this is a reflection of more general trends. The French are temperamental but always interesting; but the Netherlands is a gloomy little place that no longer functions well.

That's a good summary (except for the bit about the Netherlands - I love Holland, it's a great country!!). AF ground services are not at all good, and CDG is just an ever expanding hell-hole. Why oh why don't we just hire the management company from say Changi or Hong Kong and be done with it. For KLM their ONLY asset is Schipol.

:(

After experiencing abysmal service on AF in late 2005, I cannot even imagine how it was in the late 1980`s ...

Did they have seat cushions, warm food , drinks ?

With all due respect that both Germany and the Netherlands have social conflicts as well, I am under the impression that something does not work out so well in France at the moment...

On a related sidenote. We all agree that CDG is simply awful, most of us agree that AF is simply nothing to write home about, but at least France has some people going out on the streets and protest against some dramatic changes. In Germany the latest demo against charges for attending a university gathered a few dozen people who were more interested in the free mulled wine than the demo...
