So what's the deal in shorthaul J? Anything new and exciting in those fancy Marcel Wanders boxes?

I admit it, my most recent KL flight was on New Year's Eve. Haven't had a Caesar's or bulgur salad since that day. Can't say I miss them, the competition has been doing just fine.

LH has even managed to serve me two different breakfasts on consecutive morning flights, and you don't get the same stuff for lunch and dinner either. Quality fine, quantity a bit stingy.

And how about the longer flights in Europe, like AMS-LIS, IST, ATH. When does the hot meals and snacks in economy and business class return?

From August 3rd onwards several catering changes have been mentioned before; but there are few additional changes;

EUR flights over 2h 30 or so will have standard a 2nd beverage service in both C and economy class.( effective already since mid july or so )
In economy that will be mostly a coffee/tea service with a muffin though wine beer etc remain available ( also applicable to KLC flights on longer flights eg OPO)
An additional hot item ( ciabatta with brie etc) will be offered with the EBC box on the same longer flights

Longhaul flights;

IN WBC Soup ( hot) will return as a starter option with a new supplier ( De Verspillingsfabriek) This is applicable for flights over 7 hrs. ( eg JFK) On flights under 7 hrs a selection of 4 small bites designed by Sidney Schutte will be offered.( eg DXB)
On So called Short flights tin economy the 2nd service currently a beverage with a cold snack will be replaced by a beverage service and a hot snack.
short flights for klm are considered flights up to 7 hrs block time ; Gulf destinations , West Africa and Cairo
As mentioned earlier first service will offer a choices of 2 entrees. Bonne appetit

The name s a little odd; but their mission is commendable. Food waste is a huge problem. Personally I'm not sure if taking the tomato scraps from McDonalds is what will make the difference (From what I understand the largest waste is in the supply chain itself), but still, they are trying to improve on a bad situation. Good for them, and happy to see that they found a large customer in KLM to move lots of product and gain publicity.

And these tomato scraps go into the WBC tomato soup? If they can make it work, then I guess why not?

Is collecting food waste from a zillion McDonald's, trucking it, sorting it, cleaning it, processing it, and so forth better for the environment than simply composting the stuff and reusing it that way?

Are there btw any intensions at KLM to bring hot meals back in EBC on longer short hauls (OTP, IST, LIS etc.) or is the cardboard box here to stay?

AF are back to almost normal on the longer flights from CDG.

Marcel Wanders Boxes are a big improvement though over AF’s borderline insulting sucré/salé & paper cups anytime of the day on the short notice that international flights.

From the google translate of their websote

surplus from farmers, growers and the industrial kitchens of our national food brands. They are rejected because they are too small, misshapen or too colorful according to the too high purchasing requirements.

Some supermarkets here in the UK have started to sell 'wonkey' fruit and veg - basically mishapen but perfectly edible items.

Maybe those are the ones grown near nuclear power stations?

Seriously, KLM's catering is so AWFUL that even MacDonalds tomato scraps sound appetizing. Just the thought of that Waldorf Salad with goats cheese or that Mexican thing almost induces me to retch.
