Calling KL is pointless. When your son reported his bag missing, he was likely issued a WorldTracer number. You can check the status of the bag on WorldTracer online. When you call KL, all it is doing is looking at the same website you can check yourself.
After 20 days, your son's bag is considered lost and he may claim for the fair market value up to a maximum of approximately Ł1,300 less any interim expenses reimbursed. Note that fair market value means the value of the items today, not at time of purchase or their replacement cost.
I would strongly suggest that he submit this to his travel (lost baggage) insurance given that the like claim amount exceeds what KL is responsible for.
