JetBlue's airline code is B6.

So, B6 means JetBlue.

I don't think the B6 code "means" anything, like PA meant Pan American. Just like some radio station call signs "mean" something (WIND, Chicago) but most are just random groups of letters.

They just aren't always pointing in the same direction...

Well....there are some meanings to these things. I'm not sure about B6 but I learned from reading on FT that the reason America West is/was HP was because they used to be (or have some affiliation) with Hawaiian Pacific (or that's what they used to be called...I can't really remember).

Anyway, this was NOT a stupid question as I'm sure the answer if there is one (as to the meaning of B6) would be somewhat interesting to us FT people...I'm sure the rest of the country is yawning while we inquire!

lol, well I for one find it pretty darn boring and nerd-like to refer to an airline as "B6" when Im a passeneger. If Im a pilot, maybe, but I'll prefer typing out Jetblue for now....

These 'guesses' are from insiders at both airlines...it would still be nice to know for sure...

HP - America West chose this designator because of their major presence/hub in Phoenix (therefore, HP means 'hub Phoenix')

B6 - jetBlue chose this designator because it represents their original/current location at JFK (terminal 6) which was their first facility; suppossedly they chose this one over B3 which would have represented their first order for three planes

Who is your insider at HP? America West bought out Hawaiian Pacific's operating certificate and took the 'HP' designator.

Completely wrong.

When America West first began service the IATA code AW was already taken. So America West purchased the operating certificate from Hawaiian Pacific, and was then assigned the code HP.

Why buy another carrier's operating license instead of getting their own.

I have a few questions.

1. Was "JB" not available?

2. How many 2 letter/digit airline codes are possible?

(26 alphabets x 26 alphabets) + (26 alphabets x 10 digits) + (10 digits x 26 alphabets) ?

3. Anything beyond just the 2-letter/digit codes that is used for commercial flights?

4. Do they get recycled?

5. If the airlines have some ability to choose their designator, can they buy the rights for a certain designation from another airline, including defunct carriers?
