Jetblue Points Question

So i have some jetblue points because i flown with them many times. Can someone tell me how you do the math of calculating how many points you get? On site it mentions you get 3 points for every $1 you spent. But it says when you do it online, you get double it or 6 points. I had to do a booking through the phone last time because it did not work online. Does anyone know if that means i only get half the points or not?

It shows on the site

$300 fare

Blue

3 bonus points

= 1,800 points

$300 fare

Blue Plus

4 bonus points

= 2,100 points

I"m confused with the exact word fare here. So if your fare for the entire ticket is say $150 and taxes and fees are $70 to make it simple. your total fare is $220. So here, if you do the booking and say you do blue plus, how many total points are you getting? Is it like half of the $300 fare so thats 1,050 points? In the example with blue plus, is the calculation $300 x 3 + 900 points. Then $300 x 4 = $1200. Then add them and it comes up to 2100 points?

When i looked at booking flights through jetblue with points, i notice flights require like 10000 points or say 15000 points then it shows plus taxes and fees. So basically if you fly with jetblue and use your points, you need to have at least that amount of points right? Like say flight cost 15000 points plus x amount tax, you need at least 15000 points? The other thing is when it comes to the taxes and fees, you cannot use your points for that right?

The strange this is this. I used the date of a traveling date that i booked and taxes and fees came to around 70 dollars or so. But why is it when you check to see how much points it cost to book... its like under 10000 points but the taxes and fees is a little under 50 dollars? Shouldn't the taxes and fees be exactly the same as if you book it by paying dollars?

On the earning side you get 3 points per dollar of base fare for a Blue or 4/$ for BluePlus. If you book online you get 3 extra per dollar. Since you called in you get either 3 or 4 depending on which fare family you booked.

For redemption, yes you need at least as many points as the award price. And the award prices will vary as the cash price changes. You cannot use points for the taxes/fees.

As for the taxes not lining up perfectly, that can happen on some international itineraries, which it sounds like you are booking. If you share the city pair it may be possible to explain in more detail, but some countries charge awards and cash tickets slightly differently for taxes/fees.

I got around 5000 of these points. I know they no longer expire.

You can't use these points for a flight unless you have enough points right? Example imagine a flight is 9000 points plus the tax amount you have to pay with your credit card. You need the full 9000 points in order to use it right? Thus with 5000 points, you can't use it?

Introducing Cash + Points

Want to pay with a combination of cash and points? Select "Explore Best Fare Finder" below. Once youve selected a specific date, flight and fare type, you can use the handy slider at the bottom of the page to customize your paymentstarting with as little as 500 TrueBlue pointsor manually enter the amount.

Does that give you the same rate though as to when you only use the points? Or you are paying more points per dollar because you don't have enough points?

I was about to say no, but decided to check to make sure. Here's what I've found:

I used BOS-LAX on Oct 23rd as an example. Fares are as follows:

Blue: $314.40 or 22,200pts + $5.60
Blue Extra: $339.40 or 24,000pts + $5.60
Mint: $944.40 or 86,600pts + $5.60

Lets subtract $5.60 from each fare since it includes the $5.60 fee, whereas the points price does not include it and must be paid separately.

Blue: $308.80 divided by 22,200pts = 1.39 cents value per point
Blue Extra: $333.80 divided bt 24,000pts = 1.39 cents value per point
Mint: $938.80 divided by 86,600pts = 1.08 cents value per point

Lets use your example of having 5000 points on hand. For the same flight, it's showing: (Note that it's not letting me spend the whole 5,000 points)

Blue: 4,998pts + $263.13 (lets subtract out the $5.60) = $253.53. So, $308.80 - $253.53 = $55.27. So, $55.27 divided by 4998pts equals 1.11 cents value per point
Blue Extra: 4,999pts + $291.04 (lets subtract out the $5.60) = $285.44. So, $333.80 - $285.04 = $48.36. So, $48.36 divided by 4999pts equals 0.97 cents value per point
Mint: 4,998pts + $896.04 (lets subtract out the $5.60) = $890.44. So, $938.80 - $890.44 = $48.36. So, $48.36 divided by 4998pts equals 0.97 cents value per point

So, the answer is no, you get a worse redemption value for Points + Cash vs a full points redemption.

Good of you to spell out the math so well!

The redemption value is worse as you show, but if OP just wants to use up his points, he will save $50 or so by doing so, so not worthless
