Strange. I haven't experienced that. Is the proper pronunciation of your last name unclear from the spelling? My only guess is that if so, they want to know how to address you.

If they are having issues with the boarding pass reader, they can track boarding manually by seat number and last name. Asking the last name of the passenger is sometimes used as a verification step.
