YOTSUYA
Found a great deal at the Oakwood Yotsuya. Planning heavy sightseeing. Location seems quite central but can't seem to find any info on that neighbourhood. Anything happening in the evening ? Any nice restaurants ? Or should we be heading off to Shinjuku or Roppongi at dinner time ?
Thanks a lot

Not a big party town but there are several streets of bars and restaurants.

If you need all the bright lights and crowds, Shinjuku is very easy to get to from there.

When I studied in Japan for a semester my school was right at the Yotsuya stop. Not a huge amount of excitement in the immediate vicinity (plenty of places to grab lunch though) but you are very close train-wise to everything you could want.

Went back this summer for the first time since then. I was at Nakano station when they started playing the ドアが閉まります "tune" and something snapped in my head. I realized then the extent to which people there are "trained" to react automatically to these tunes.

Aww man, now I have to watch the movie so I can answer you...
Tokyo (and Japan more generally) is a great place to be but I'd never want to have to do the daily rat-race grind there. I still keep one of those "the train was late" notes in my wallet as a reminder of that mode of life.
Which is why I now live on a subtropical island in the middle of the ocean

Spring 2005, at the international campus closer to Ichigaya, through the CIEE program. Stayed with a host family in Nakano-ku, which made for less than a ten minute train ride in--usually took the rapid to Yotsuya and walked the rest of the way.

i miss the ドアが閉まります tune...not fun esp when you're crammed right by the door while it's actually closing and you're toes are about to be swallowed by the door!
