Ok, looking for an update. Did some research and thread necromancy here seems the better option.

I need to store a small backpack content (<15 Litres) for 3 days in early April.

Coin Operated Lockers - Narita Airport Guide

Baggage Storage - Narita Airport Guide

I see there is baggage storage available from 500 per day and lockers from 300 - so looking at the lockers.

How easy are the lockers to operate (Suica? Coin? Cash? Credit?) and how hard is it to find an empty one?

(I see 8 days maximum for locker storage.)

The Suica-compatible keyless lockers are very easy to use. They are touch screen, you can select English as language choice, and choose whether to pay by cash or Suica/Pasmo (cannot remember if credit card is allowed). If paying by cash/coin the machine will print out a receipt that you will need when you want to retrieve your luggage. If paying by Suica, you just have to tap your card on the machine when you come back (has to be the same card you paid with).

The regular key lockers are coin-only.

As for availability, no idea, have never used the lockers at Narita. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I have used Narita Terminal 1 first floor (arrival) lockers in the central annex. They are tucked in behind the escalators and near the elevators. Working from memory, the steps go like:
  1. Touch English on the screen
  2. Touch Deposit Bag icon on the screen
  3. Touch one of the available lockers on the screen, and the light on the door will flash
  4. Place your bag in the locker and close the door which will lock
  5. Return to the console and touch your desired form of payment
  6. If IC card (i.e. Suica), touch your IC card to the reader. Your card becomes the key to unlock the locker. It will deduct the first day's fee from your balance. Take the receipt from the machine.
  7. If cash, enter a PIN code and insert money (1000 bill, 500 coin or 100 coin) into the slot to pay for the first day. The machine will print a receipt with the PIN code on it (I think.)

When you are ready to retrieve your bag
  1. Touch English on the screen
  2. Touch retrieve bag
  3. Touch your IC card to the reader or enter your PIN code. If balance is due, it is deducted from your IC card or deposit money to pay.
  4. The door will unlock and retrieve your bag

Will have about a 24 hour layover, get in around 2pm, leave the next day at 12pm. Looking to stash the big luggage. these lockers, they are outside of security i assume?

Also, is there a chance my airline (thai airways) will let me check a bag the day before?

In general, left luggage facilities are in the arrivals halls. Check this link for names and hours of said facilities.

As a follow up, I could not find any suica enabled machines at T2 check-in hall - cash only.

Anyway, it was quite strait forward and thanks for the assistance.

(No key - a slip printed out with the PIN.)

What terminal?

The locker I used was in the T2 departures/Check-in hall (landside).

Arriving on a Monday in October at 2:55pm on ANA.
Departing Tuesday 12pm Thia Airways.

I believe both are in Terminal 1 if im not mistaken?

So do these lockers take credit card as well? Or do we need to find coins?

I see it does take Suica card. Does that card work on NEX or Skyliner, JR Yamanote, etc?

Locker's don't take credit cards, cash (notes, coins) or Suica only.

For simplicity, assume that your Suica doesn't work on NEX or Skyliner (it works for base fare but you need to buy a separate ticket for a reserved seat + express train fare). For other local trains like JR, subway, local buses, Suica will work everywhere.

Thanks good to know. So it sounds like it is still worth it to get Suica right? They refund any leftovers correct?

They refund any remaining balance minus nominal service fee. Plus they refund you the 500y deposit.
