Updated official guidance: "Should I use MySOS or Visit Japan Web Service (VJW)?"

Source: https://www.hco.mhlw.go.jp/faq/fasttrack-en.html#8-1

Interestingly, it seems that registrations already completed on MySOS will remain valid for use up till early next year (even if no new registrations are possible from this November).

8-1 Should I use MySOS or Visit Japan Web Service (VJW)?

On November 1, 2022, Fast Track functions will shift from MySOS to Visit Japan Web. However, there is a transition period, and your options will depend on your arrival date and registration status, etc. Please read below for details.

If you are about to start a new registration

If you want to start registration procedures on or before October 31, please use MySOS.
However, if your Japan arrival is on or after November 14, you will not be able to start a new registration with MySOS, so please use Visit Japan Web on or after November 1.
If you start registration procedures on or after November 1, please use Fast Track.
Note: Fast Track processing is expected to be very busy for a few days from November 1, so if you are arriving on or before November 5, we recommend that you complete your registration via MySOS before October 31, to allow sufficient processing time.

If you have already completed vaccination certificate registration using MySOS

Until January 13, 2023, you can still use MySOS. You can show the MySOS blue screen when you check in for your flight to Japan or when you land.

If you have already completed the questionnaire using MySOS

Until January 13, 2023, you can still register a vaccination certificate or a COVID test certificate to be reviewed/processed.

If you have already completed your registration via MySOS, you can also redo your registration via Visit Japan Web. (Note: The data will not be linked.)
Visit Japan Web also allows registration for procedures other than quarantine documentation.

Just to report, I pre-filled out VJW a week ago, but still filled out the paper disembarkation cards. In line for immigration at Narita they ask you to show either or, but not both. The line gatekeeper has a paper asking to show either the paper cards or the VJW QR code to enter the line. No need to do paper cards anymore.

To add, at customs you can use the second QR code at the automated gate, scan your paper, QR code and it takes a photo, then you go through customs with no inspection if you have nothing to declare.

Thanks for the update.

Re: immigration, did the QR code save you any time on the ground at all? From your account I gather that all inbound foreigners are admitted into the same passport inspection queue (i.e., no separate lane for those with QR codes).

not really, the queue is the exact same, just makes it easier for the immigration agent and saving 5 minutes on the plane

VJW is now accepting the same information you previously have to use MySOS to do so. Both are using the same underlying system just with presentation (app or web).

After my passport was scanned, the "Scanning" status changed to "Please verify" . It was not immediately clear to me what & where I was supposed to verify. It turned out that I had to click on the "Passport" link and verify passport info there. It would have been nice if the "Please verify" status had been linked to the verification page.

I used VJW today for my upcoming trip, arriving in Tokyo on 13 Nov.

I previously did MySOS for a previous trip in Oct, and I forgot to clear my phone browser cache first before starting a new submission for the quarantine stuff. Spent awhile wondering why it wouldn't save the questionnaire. Once I sorted that out, all good and it only took about 5min for my vaccination cert to be reviewed and the quarantine procedures page turned blue.

I tried submitting my vaccination card today as well but for a trip in mid-December. I was ready to wait for weeks but it only took 4 hours for approval. So I guess they are not too busy. I hope it remains "blue" !

Re VJW, can it take care of family members in 1 phone? Or each member has to do the same on separate phones?
How far in advance of travel (approximate # of days) should I fill out forms on VJW? TIA!

My boss (US citizen) is going to Tokyo at the end of this month and forwarded the Visit Japan site to me because he was alarmed by its use of the word "quarantine" because it has a decidedly negative connotation here in China. I told him not to sweat the nomenclature but figured I should confirm here first. Thanks in advance, all.

Procedures for a "fully vaccinated" US citizen just means completing the necessary forms and providing proof of vaccination. For a person who cannot provide proof of vaccination and booster, the procedure includes a pre-travel test (72 hrs). In both cases there is no quarantine - no period of isolation. (Of course, you should read the fine print about what "fully vaccinated" means, what tests are acceptable for unvaccinated passengers, and what forms are required etc.)

Thanks. I have received 2 doses of Pfizer and 2 doses of Sinopharm (doesn't seem to be on the Japan approved list), but I'm quite used to getting PCR tests by now.

Japan's criteria for acceptable test methods, sampling method, and documentation:
https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/border_test.html

If you can get a clinic to complete the form drawn up by the Japanese government, you will minimize risk of not being compliant with the documentation requirements.

Answering my own question. From the FAQ section of the link that OP posted (Post #1), I found this:

"Japan entry/return procedures are processed on an individual basis, so please do a separate Fast Track registration for each person."
