For those who are new here in Kanto/Tokyo area , you might have heard the word "setsuden/ 節電". Below is a link from TEPCO about up to date energy demand and production in English. So if you notice that lights etc. are turned off, and air conditioning is set at 28c you are not mistaken.
Not unlike the aftermath of 2011, the brand stores will continue to use full power and air conditioning while having their doors wide open. Try not to follow their example !

Makes me thankful to be living in a Mori building since they have their own power generation and are not included in TEPCO related matters like this.

I am currently planning a visit this summer. Besides the heat, the power situation this summer makes me think I should avoid August so my precious time off will not turn into a miserable one.

LOL - so do we - unfortunately my wife is Japanese -- so compliance is an obligation, a duty, and a source of honor -- not an option! After 311 -- summers in Japan are my definition of hell on earth.... I mean come on - even the trains have to be that bad? I am returning this week to deal with the myriad of issues one faces with a home in Tokyo that hasn't been used much for two years -- and to visit family in Western Japan -- and I can't wait to leave! We will be back in late September -- my favorite time of the year to be in Japan!

Taiwan is worse. But then again, so is the Mojave Desert, unless you prefer dry heat.

Wow. We pay for that separate power grid so you guys should use it! The duty is for TEPCO customers not the general public where they dont overlap.

Thats my opinion at least.

And yeah, this is MISERABLE and only June! Makes me want to cut and bail on Japan for the entire summer. I like your plan. Come back when its over. Theres a reason why many people live in California. My place over there is sitting unused like yours over here. Hope I turned off the AC. Lol

Hot and muggy summer is already hitting hard. When I am out of the big city environment of Tokyo or Osaka, it reminds me of how much we are under an environment of AC (air condition) in the big city of Tokyo or Osaka. Sure, we do need to walk outside in Tokyo or Osaka but outside of big cities far bigger time is spent in a non-AC environment compared with Tokyo or Osaka.

Hope no blackout in Tokyo. The forecast for Tokyo 23 ward area for next week is a high temp above 30 C. Everybody keep it cool and drink a lot of water.
