Yes. ANA can check your luggage through all the way. And yes, you will be on the hook for the rebooking of a missed connection.

Also, ANA, as a Japanese major airline, will be able to help you get a shore pass if needed.

Any experiences on international to international transfers in Nagoya NGO on separate tickets?

Is the transfer security open? I’m trying to gauge how close to cut it.

I arrived in Nagoya last week, the airport was absolutely deserted. There were however very bored looking people at transit security, it looked closed but there were actually people there.

I successfully managed to transfer between CX and AY using the transfer security. It indeed looked closed, but a single staff member was seated somewhat hidden behind the xray machine. He seemed utterly surprised that someone showed up. After a lengthy chat with someone else over the phone he screened my bags and I got to enjoy the wonders of the NGO Plaza Premium lounge.

All in all a pleasant experience - would do it again.

Using train, assuming a 12H start at Tokyo station, can get to Hakata station by 17H, 23K yen, so more expensive and arrives later than the flying, although the flight price excludes checked bags but the ekibens at Tokyo stn are better than the soraben at NRT? Train also more flexible.

From HND....can make the 15:55, arriving just after the train, but still in time for dinner. Most expensive option but can get a free drink at the domestic sakura lounge...

Some things to think about:
Do you have a lot of, or large luggage? Then flying from NRT is probably more convenient to avoid lugging it around.
Do you have travel insurance that would cover you if you miss your flight?

Personally I would probably take the train in this scenario since I am paranoid about these things, it has the highest flexibility as you mentioned.

Looking at the airport limousine bus time table , there is a
1120 bus from NRT to HND ( might be a bit tight if you arrive at 1000 and have a lot of people in immigration) getting in at 1250
1220 getting in at 1345
so you could get the 1510 JL flight from HND to FUK

The train is probably better if you do not have very large luggage ( as you may need to make a large luggage reservation for the shinkansen). You could also send the luggage by luggage delivery service from NRT landside to to Fukuoka ( may take a couple of days)
I have heard it is easier to transfer to the shinkansen at Shinagawa station ( stop after tokyo station on the Narita express) as there is less distance involved though there is likely to be fewer food options at shinagawa station compared to tokyo station

I'd just fly from Narita. You are already at the airport, the airport in Fukuoka is in the middle of the city and super convenient on the subway.

13:20 should be quite doable, Jetstar checkin closes 30 minutes before departure. But that is in T3, the transfer counter in T2 will close 60 minutes before.

If you do take the Shinkansen, yes indeed, as mentioned, change at Shinagawa. Tokyo station has the Narita Express in basement level 5 and the Shinkansen a level or two above ground. Where Shinagawa has the two platforms pretty close together.

I went through the exact same thought process. (Arr on LX at 1010 and going to FUK) … NRT, train, HND???

In the end I booked the 1510 ex HND on Avios. We will be travelling fairly light (one suitcase) but basically the JAL flight won because it’s refundable (and lounge access too).

I noticed that my IB281 has been arriving early, sometimes just after 9am, I'm thinking if I might be able to make the 1140 Peach? Need to get from T2 to T1 by Peach's 30min deadline so 1110.

If I buy Peach's "Plus" fare, it's 500yen to cancel - latest by an hour before departure so 1040. The fare is good 16990 even with the Plus fare.
The 1320 Jetstar is more relaxing, but maybe a bit too much time in NRT. Jetstar even the highest fare-class is only refund to credit.

I'm thinking buying the Peach/1140 with train as backup....

Connecting at HND to domestic on separate tickets. Having read the posts about long waiting times at HND I had booked an ANA cheapest fare with a five hour layover. HND arrival only took 20 minutes so I asked ANA to put us on an earlier flight. No problem, no costs and within 1.5 hours we were on our way. So booking a short layover and worry is not always a thing.

I'm flying HNL-HND on NH, and then HND-CGK on GA the next day (layover is 18 hours). The two legs are on separate reservations, and I'll be flying with a companion who would require a visa to enter Japan. Because of that, we didn't want to complicate customs/immigration matters and are just planning on remaining airside at HND and staying overnight at an airside transit hotel (Villa Fontaine). However, we'll be travelling with check-in luggage. I know ANA interlines with Garuda, but since the two legs are on separate reservations and the layover is 18 hours, I'm unsure whether we'll be able to check our bags straight through to CGK when we check in with ANA at HNL. We'll give it a shot, but in case we can't, I'm wondering what exactly the logistics will be of picking up our bags at HND? Will that require exiting the secure area? Or will we be able to pick up our bags, proceed to the transit hotel, and then check our bags in with Garuda the next day, all while remaining in the secure area?

It is an open question whether ANA will check in across separate tickets to Garuda. Within Star Alliance they are very efficient at it, but to a non-partner airline from an outstation is more dubious. But it could happen. That have an interline agreement only means that they can transfer luggage, it is not a definition of the handling on separate tickets.

Villa Fontaine is landside, Royal Park The Haneda is the airside hotel. But be aware that they have both land side and air side rooms, so be sure to book the right ones.

If you have to pick up luggage, yes you will need to go landside, and it will be important to check it in with the passenger that can enter Japan. Also note that if you exit, and the flight is the next day after 5am, you might not be able to re-enter immediately, and would need a landside hotel for the night.

This is super-helpful, albeit not entirely what I wanted to hear. :) So if we're unsuccessful getting our luggage through-checked (which we won't know until day-of), it's likely going to be *much* more complicated attempting to remain airside. Given this, it's sounding like the safer play is just to apply for a visa to enter Japan and plan on spending our overnight layover landside (whether it be Villa Fontaine or some other nearby landside hotel).
