OKA-HND//NRT-WAW ANA/LOT less than 24h transfer
I guess the default is to expect to pick up the bags at HND and then drag them to NRT to check-in for my LO flight. However, I saw ANA states this:
"When traveling between Haneda and Narita airports or Itami and Kansai airports to connect from a Japan domestic flight to an international flight, your baggage will be checked in for your international flight at the departure airport for that flight." OKA is part of it. Anyone knows if it is the case? TIA! |

ANA only has a single daily flight IT NRT. KIX NRT seems to be all LCC these days.
In the very recent past NRT had just enough number of domestic flights out of NRT to connect to, and the NH domestic terminal was always very busy. Now they’ve gotten rid of all flights to Naha and KIX and there’s just 1 flight left to CTS. Yet there are like 20+ Star Alliance long haul flights coming in daily to NRT (plus more from One World). If the thinking is, just fly to HND if you’re connecting onward to domestic flight, that does not work for many of us. The alternatives are separate tix on LCC or bus to HND, but those alternatives suck. I don’t understand this, and I wonder if anything will change. |

I guess the thinking is what it has mainly been for years, for the majority of domestic connections take the bus to Haneda.
I’ve got a 3.5hr intl to domestic layover on NH in July. Wonder if the domestic counter will even be open to accept bags 2.5-3 hrs prior. Im taking their only CTS flight, but i wonder if the writing’s on the wall for that flight. Do they even still have ANA Festa at the bus gate? I was there last summer it was still bustling late afternoon, so they must’ve axed all those domestic flights after post-Covid reopening. |

I wonder what NH’s domestic area even looks like now. Seems they only have 2 daily flights at this point!

The JAL flights are mainly Jet Star these days with a JAL code. But there are still a few JL operated flights. |

When you exit from customs there is a counter to do bag drop. I did not notice the opening hours, but it was open for my arrival with NH183. The lounge (if applicable) is also the arrivals lounge, so it is open all day.
I really hope they re-introduce a few more domestic flights out of NRT. Otherwise they strand way too many pax at NRT with poor options. |

The set up of NRT and HND is pretty idiotic. I'd love to fly into HND from Europe , but LOT and TK are still using NRT so my options are limited.
I doubt that Japan Aviation cares about the situation since the one who are affected is not them, and there are more than plenty who would love to visit Japan. |

I wonder what would happen if Shizuoka airport got their shinkansen stop... |

I doubt that Japan Aviation cares about the situation since the one who are affected is not them, and there are more than plenty who would love to visit Japan. Both JAL and ANA have routes that are only flown to Narita. And eg. Hawaii on both of the carriers has a majority of Narita flights. So even on JANA you have a fair amount of domestic connecting passengers from Narita. Haneda was left as the domestic airport when Narita opened, and was then gradually allowed to return to international service from world cup 2002 between Gimpo and Haneda, Hongqiao Haneda started in 2007, and then the ball started rolling generally from there on international operations. The problem is that neither airport has the capacity to fully serve the city. Narita opened with 1 runway instead of 3 but finally got two full size runways, and Haneda is already running at capacity during the daytime for the (now) 4 runways. Except from 22:30 to 06:30 you can find slots in that window. |

London and NYC have same problem... I guess the amount of traffic necessitates either one big airport or multiple airports.
JFK is very well connected to domestic network for One World and SkyTeam (plus JetBlue codeshares), and the Star international traffic is a fraction of what NRT gets. Vast majority of Star traffic is funneled thru EWR for domestic connections via UA, but EWR still offers some key domestic connections on DL and AA. Not to mention the eastern USA has many alternatives to NYC as far as international gateways.

So more realistically, why can’t things go back to circa 2018 when NRT had limited but decent number of mainline domestic connections? Specific to Star, it seems the problem is that NH had intended to offload all that to Peach, yet it didn’t work out and then they never bothered to take any actions to fill the void. But if the Jpn government is driving some of these developments and decisions, then I agree it’s pretty idiotic. |

Same here. I mostly fly TPAC out of YVR, and all the flights ex YVR go to NRT (except NH which gets in too late).
NYC is not the same as the TYO situation. Not to mention the eastern USA has many alternatives to NYC as far as international gateways. I understand the capacity issue, but I think things could work much better if it were modeled after NYC… eg, NRT becomes primarily OW, HND mainly Star. Of course this may not be realistic since HND is the preferred airport by concensus. Seems most of the Jet Star Japan domestic flights out of Narita comes with a JL code for connections from and to international. Sometimes it does seem more attractive to use the bus from or to Haneda though. But at least there are options. JAL themselves have a few domestic flights from Narita.
The idea of separating JL and NH get an airport each is a good idea - I guess both would want HND so it would be a difficult decision to put who in where :D They can put ST in Shizuoka airport :D |
