Typhoon Faxai

I have an early evening flight out of NRT tomorrow (Sept 8) and ANA has contacted me, warning me of possible disruptions due to typhoon Faxai.

https://mainichi.jp/english/articles...0m/0na/002000c

Does anyone know how likely it is that flights will be canceled? I read that Japan gets hit by typhoons a lot.
I could rebook to a morning flight, but it would cost me more and Id also prefer to have a few hours more in Japan.
Thanks!

Youd be cutting it close with a flight out tomorrow night, looking at the latest storm track from the Japanese Meteorological Agency: https://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/

If it does get canceled, ANA would definitely help accommodate you. Alternately, if your credit card has trip delay insurance, you could look into that. Otherwise, if getting home on time is more of a priority, Id call in to ANAs helpdesk and explain your situation. They might be able to switch you to another flight as well.

Thank you! It’s NH811 NRT-HKG which departs at 1825 (6:25 PM).
It’s a Miles&More award booking, and I’m only connecting in HKG to LH797.
The connection time is just one hour, which is MCT... So even a delay could be a problem.

But like I said, it’s an award booking, there is no award space left now and the ticket was not issued by ANA.
Do you think ANA might still be able/willing to help?

Oh dang, looks like the only other ANA flight to HKG tomorrow that still has seats available would be at 10 in the morning. And I’ve been strongly advised not to leave the airport in Hong Kong...

Currently in Japan and flying to HND on domestic flight tomorrow (Sun,. Sept. 8th). I just watched evening news and forecast is that this one will pass Tokyo area fast.

Typhoon no. 15 (in Japan they call it by number, not by name) current forecast is that Tokyo will start experience effect of Typhoon around 3 p.m. on Sunday and last till 9 a.m. on Monday. If your departure or arrival into HND or NRT is between Sunday 3 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m. then will be facing likely cancellation/delay.

My flight is on Sunday noon time so hope my flight will go, fingers crossed...

Tough to say, the forecast said this one will.come and go fast. Most intense period will be late evening and early morning.

6 p.m. may end up fine, but again possible to see heavy rain already. Also airlines may proactively cancel flight try to avoid passengers stuck in an airport.

Thanks, my flight is on the noon so hope all will work out. Hope all will work out for you, too.

Another curve ball for flying in/out Sunday evening at HND is that the emperor is traveling to Akita right now. The emperor and his wife left HND Saturday morning on special charter flight to AXT. The emperor and his wife is returning to HND on a special charter flight on Sunday evening from AXT.

I do not know how they will work out about typhoon no. 15 hitting Tokyo Sunday evening, but a special charter flight of emperor alone will put traffic at HND on hold for while.

Good luck with HND on Sunday evening.

We obviously can't speak to the ANA (and partner?) awards policy for times like this, but we had something similar in Hong Kong in early June, 2017. There was a typhoon barreling straight at HKG. Then we got a note slipped under our hotel room door alerting us to it (in case we had been hiding in a cave somewhere!?).
And THEN... the Typhoon was upgraded to Category 8, which was apparently right at the top of the scale (it was a bit hard for us to get that exact, but we certainly got the main point).

We were on CX F, which doesn't have a lot of seats (as in only 6 per flight), so we were quite worried about IF our flight was cancelled, how long would it be before *2* F seats were open again, with only 1 flight per day nonstop to our destination.

Our tickets were with AAdvantage miles, booked directly with AA, not CX.
But at the last minute that evening, as the weather looked more dire, we called CX (note, not AA) and asked them if we could switch to one day early, and leave in the morning.

"No problem" was the answer, and we changed reservations, albeit not particularly looking forward to taking off into an arriving typhoon. (For whatever reason, though we are accustomed to "Hurricanes", "Typhoon" sounded *much* more ominous!)

As it turned out, there was very heavy rain, and the ride to the airport was slow... but our take-off was on time, and remarkably smooth as well.
I don't think a "Category 8" Typhoon actually "hit" HKG directly, and we probably should have stayed. After all, we DID have travel insurance, so they would have kept us at the Peninsula for a few more nights if necessary.
However, I don't know how long they'd do that if the only reason was "airport open, but we want to wait for F availability during prime travel season"

Point is, CX allowed us to change our AAdvantage-issued tickets, and at zero charge, given the weather circumstances.

Good luck!

GC

It is Sunday morning at Japan. Forecast for Typhoon no. 15 seems like same as last night. Looks like airlines has not cancelled flights yet, but JAL is putting Sunday afternoon and Monday morning flights under weather advisory, passengers can change reservation without penalty.

As for Tokyo metropolitan area, forecast is same as last night. Rain and wind will be heavy starting late afternoon and continue till early Monday morning. Best case scenario for tourists is that Typhoon will pass through Tokyo metropolitan area during middle of the night while they are sleep, minimal impact on their schedule. Worse case scenario is that tourists they will be stuck in their hotels on Sunday evening and Monday mornings, difficult to secure meals on Sunday evening and Monday morning.

3:30 p.m. at Tokyo. Still sunny at Tokyo My flight arrived on time at HND at 2:00 p.m. Looked like flights were operating on-time, but saw 8 p.m. flights being cancelled.

Forecast seems to be same. The weather in Tokyo will deteriorate fast and looked like worst around midnight. Strong wind will likely last till Monday morning. There is flash flood watch out in Tokyo tonight.

Authorities are warning about Typhoon no. 15. 8 p.m. at Tokyo and has not even started rain yet.

But national metrology is warning that peak wind can reach 50 m/sec. Where typhoon which hit Kansai area few years ago and devastated KIX was 40 m/sec wind.

Many public transportation at Tokyo will not start running till 8 a.m. on Monday.

All of the surface JR lines are out of action until 8am tomorrow or until further notice. A good number of express trains have been cancelled as well, namely Narita Express trains #1-14. If anyones gonna be flying into or out of Narita tomorrow (9/9), best to keep that in mind.
