Hi guys

Does anyone know of any private onsen facilities in or around the Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto region that offers day use rather then a nights stay? They call it "kashikiri". It would be nice to rent out a private onsen/hot springs room for 1 or so hours...

Some of the onsen have hourly private rooms. For example, Hakone Yuryo in Hakone has shuttle just across the street from the Hakone-Yumoto train station at the bus station. You can go to the public shared onsen, or see if they have a private available. They take reservations up to 30 days in advance as well.

Often some ryokans will do lunch and a bathing experience. Some let you have a room and others the communal facility.

The tourist bureau in the train station at Hakone-Yumoto has a list. I've used a private onsen at the Hakone Fujiya hotel a few times. They rent by the hour.

I suspect there are plenty of other places that offer this service as well.

Sorry to bump this thread but I'm going to be in Japan next winter and wanted to find a kashikiri somewhere north of Tokyo to spend the better part of a day at. My SO will be doing her Disney Tokyo experience which I am not interested in so I have a free day. I'll have a JR Rail Pass and I'm a huge train enthusiast. I was thinking I would take a train to Shinjuku and ride the rails up north, relax at an onsen for a few hours and have lunch, then ride back and meet her at our hotel. Any ideas? We are already planning on being in Hakodate/Sapporo for a few days and down in Kyoto/Osaka for a few days so I was hoping to see more of Japan.

Kashikiri (private onsen tub you can rent for yourself) is usually only for 30-60min. So when you say you want to relax in an onsen for a few hours, I'm not sure that you'd be able to find a place that would suit your needs. I suppose one could rent out a kashikiri bath over multiple time slots, but then you wouldn't want to do that as kashikiri bath is usually just a single small well/bath and you're not going to want to spend that much time anyways.

Of course you can instead opt for day-onsen package at a hotel/ryokan that gives you access to communal onsen facilities with a variety of baths (and such place may also have an option to include 30-60min use of kashikiri bath for additional fees). Or I think there are some hotels that offer day-use of their guestrooms with private en-suite onsen.

I think 60 minutes is enough, I wasn't sure of the conventions for that type of setup. There's a bunch of good ideas in the other linked thread as well. I'm actually looking for a snowy (It will be in February) onsen experience as well. I'm more than willing to head reasonably far up towards Aomori or up into Gunma too. Also looking to tie it in with a great lunch too.

I'm trying to do my own research but I'm having trouble with knowing the right things to look for. This has already been a huge help.

It might be hard to do your own research for kashikiri onsen. A lot of hotels/ryokans have day-use plans (lunch, communal onsen use) with kashikiri bath option. But most of these places only have info on this stuff in Japanese. They might have English info, but it's usually limited to very basic info on the hotel facilities and room types.

If you want onsen with snow and easy train access from Tokyo, you might check out:

There're other places closer to Tokyo with potential snow, such as Echigo Yuzawa.
I can't guarantee that Unazuki will have snow either. It all depends on mother nature.
There's a lot of places with better chances of snow, but that will require long bus rides. Manza, Shirahone, Hirayu to name a few.

If you're willing to spend 2.5 hours in a train each way (only cost would be your time since you have JR Pass), I might suggest taking the yamagata shinkansen all the way up to kaminoyama onsen, then spending the day at the Koyo Hotel/Ryokan. I visited them in Feb this year and it was amazing (and snowy): ¥10,000 for sukiyaki meal, ¥11,000 for shabu shabu meal.

What you get for your money is a day-use room (10.30am - 3.00pm), in-room kaiseki, and free use of their two onsens. What my wife and I did was reach at 10.30, go onsen, have lunch, relax, then onsen again (they switch the Male / Female assignments over lunchtime), then leave.

I don't think they have any private onsen option though, but as you'll be alone I'll assume that you don't really need it. Plus the baths will likely be almost deserted anyway.

This is another amazing spot! I may have to take another day for an onsen trip while we are there. I am trying to utilize my JR Pass as much as possible.

On the subject of kashikiri/private baths, my SO is much less comfortable with being nude in public than I am. We are planning 3-4 days in Hakodate/Sapporo/Otaru during the Ice Festival and were hoping to go to spend one day/night at a premium onsen. I know that most are not coed baths but she's indicated that if they were she'd be much more comfortable. Is there anywhere that fits the bill for this? I'd rather not be pigeonholed into a private onsen situation.
