AA miles J redemption ticket LAX-BKK on JL
JL61 LAX-NRT departs 12:00 pm, arrives 4:45 pm JL33 HND-BKK departs 12:05 am, arrives 5:05 am Final destination is USM so I have to purchase a separate BKK-USM ticket from Bangkok Airways. The first BKK-USM flight departs at 6:30 am but I may opt for the 7:00 am to be safe. So about 7 hours layover in Tokyo but realistically, maybe 5 hours to change airport. I will have only carry on luggage. I've been to Tokyo many times so generally familiar with NRT transportation options but expert FT opinions are welcome. Questions: 1. I've actually never done the NRT-HND transfer. Is this enough time? I assume yes otherwise AA/JL won't ticket. 2. What's the best transfer option? Take the limo bus or take the train? I usually take N'EX into the city and I won't have problem navigating Shinagawa station to change train to HND. The question is if that is worth the pain? And will the train be faster? For sure the train will be on time while the bus is subject to traffic situation. 3. It's technically not related to this but AA offered me an alternate routing that involves at 16 hour layover in HKG and gets me into BKK at 12:05 AM. So if you have the choice, would you do the NRT-HND shuffle but one that gets me to BKK at a decent time to catch the first flight of the day to USM; or you do the CX to HKG route, take the 16 hours for a day trip to the city, but then have to sit at BKK for 6 hours for the next flight to USM? The NEX to Shinagawa Station takes roughly 1h 10m, the change to the Keikyu line is easy if you have a through ticket, and it is another 13 to 20 minutes to Haneda from there. You will most likely be hitting Shinagawa Station at evening rush hour, which is another good point for taking the bus. There are Keisei through trains, but they are just the local commuter trains as well, so they will get very packed at that time of day, and there is just the standard bench seating. I am not sure how frequent they are in the rush hour periods. |
HND domestic to Intl with MCT, doable in AM rush?
I have the following connection, all on one ticket
NH050 CTS - HND, arrives 9.05 AM, in Economy connecting to NH855 HND - CGK, departs 10.15 AM I have checked luggage. I noticed this is the MCT, is this a realistic connection? It is the first flight out of CTS that day. I understand I have to reclear security at HND Intl terminal, mornings tend to be very busy, is that correct? Is this calling it too close? If I miss the flight, the next one to CGK is not until 10 PM that day. Any insight is appreciated. Anyone done this connection successfully without a mad rush? The NH agent on the phone was very indifferent, just saying "it's ok". |

Just follow the signs for international connections. That time of day it runs every 10 minutes and takes 15 minutes to get to the international terminal. If ANA did not get almost all passengers through this connection, they would not be selling it. |
Thanks.
My main concern is security re-clearance at the international terminal. I had experience departing from HND around 9.00 AM with queues right back into the terminal. Is there a special security gate for connecting passengers so I dont have to mix with the exHND departing PAX? |

The donestic check in counters are a short walk to the right when you exit from customs. As you arrive in J there is also an arrivals lounge next to it (doubles as domestic departure lounge) Once you go through security, there is nothing really so don't go through too early. If your inbound is on time, not time problems. Immigration can have long lines, but still usually not that long. Reach out to staff if you look to be getting in ti me trouble.. The risk of a missed connection is your own, and you have to figure out whether you want to run that. In normal circumstances, I would say you can manage with an hour delay, but not much more. |
PEK-NRT-LAX in J class -- no checked baggage Please advise if 60mins is enough. |

No. Only if arriving flight is at least 45 minutes early would I consider it possible and that would be tight. Too many slow downs, chief among them line-up at immigration.
Thanks figured that was pushing it is there airport hotel at HND ? Sounds like morning flight would be better |

You have a good chance of making it but only if your first flight is on time. But that may not happen and, if you have checked bags, even a small delay or slightly above-average immigration queue would actually make you miss the 45min cutoff for bag drops to domestic. All in all, there's no way I would do it on 2 separate tix. I'd only consider it if we're talking >2.5hrs transit time. If you're going to opt for an early morning flight out the next day, consider Tokyu Excel Hotel in HND. If you want to hop into Tokyo a bit, then you could stay in Shinagawa. |
