First snow in Kanto

It's really coming down in central Tokyo today. I heard parts of Yokohama can expect something like 20 cm accumulation (?!)...

Anyone stuck at HND or NRT, or perhaps spun out in a ditch somewhere?

This is the most snow I have ever seen in Tokyo. And the wind is occasionally pretty fierce!

I feel sorry for all the people getting dressed up in kimonos for Coming of Age Day ceremonies today, assuming those are still going on.

As long as they can get some actual snow/rain geta, from experience I can confirm that the traditional layers of silk and cotton gauze offer extremely effective insulation.
A good ama rain protector, a decent shawl, some leg warmers (over the legs AND arms) and these girls will be cozier than the lasses out and about in miniskirts in and around London (which has just received its first dusting of snow) or any other British town.

And the photographs will be gorgeous.

We were scheduled to leave today from NRT and had a 2pm ticket on the Narita Express leaving Tokyo Station. When we got to the tracks at 1:30pm, the 1:03pm train was still there. We hopped on, and it finally departed at 2:45pm. Train stopped multiple times, and this last time the emergency brakes were applied!

You look offline now, so I hope everything was all right after that and you are safe on board.

The 1:03 Narita Express from Tokyo Station arrived into Narita Airport at 6:05 pm. We made our way to check in for our 5pm flight which has been indefinitely delayed. The good news is that we arrived safely and were still able to get on the flight. Currently waiting at the gate.

From the 7pm newscast, it looks like the snow was still coming down pretty good at Narita. Hope you're able to leave tonight.

All Nippon Airways Co. (9202) canceled 250 domestic flights as of 5:30 p.m. local time, affecting about 58,000 passengers, it said in a faxed statement. Japan Airlines Co. (9201) said it canceled 469 domestic flights, affecting more than 42,000 passengers, as of 5 p.m.
Very interesting if these figures quoted by Bloomberg are accurate.

I saw a similar figure on the evening's NHK news.

Also, AA153 (ORD-NRT) diverted to KIX.

Flight delays of up to 6 hours yesterday. A few flights at NRT took off well after midnight.

DL172 took off at a somewhat reasonable time but diverted from JFK to DTW for some reason.

There's about 10cm left on the ground in Tokyo this morning after the snow turned to rain last night.

The Nippori-Toneri Liner light rail is down this morning because the tracks are frozen over, but otherwise trains seem to be running ok.

The Narita Express was running slightly behind schedule this morning, but I imagine that things are back to normal by now.

Interesting. What is the loophole that allows departure after 11pm?

Made the mistake of trying to drive home from the office on the 246 heading into Tokyo yesterday. After just 20km in 7 hours I abandoned the car at Grandberry Mall and took the train home. Train ride was uneventful and on time Don't know how the airport buses made it to NRT yesterday, or were they cancelled?
