I'm also doing an award that involves KIX to ITM transport. In my case, I would rather take the train to Tokyo, but I was told that the OJ would split the AA award. Is there a way to avoid this on an award?

I think that has everything to do with AA's rules and nothing to do with Japan, so I'd suggest asking the question in the AA forum.
