I would like to know what is the most economical way to go from Narita to Shinjuku Round trip on the same day? I have seen the Nartita express promotion but this seems to be only a one way ticket.

Is there any type of round trip discount? If not can I use the remainder load on the Narita express promotion (which is about 2000 YEN) to buy a return ticket?

It depends if transfer is a problem for you.

The reasonable one is to use Keisei Skyliner, they have a tourist package which includes a 1 Day Metro Pass + Single Way NRT --> Keisei Ueon, then you connected to Tokyo Metro to Shinjuku, on return you go back to Keisei Ueon and get on Keisei Skyliner again, the return trip cost you 1920 yen which means 4020 all-in (which cover your all-day Tokyo Metro as well) You can always use slower "fast" train for Keisei but considering your 1 day mad-dash I won't recommend

For JR + Suica to ease your access, the package comes at 3500 yen but the Suica only contains 1500 yen, while the 500 yen deposit is refundable (face value refundable at 210 yen handling charge), it will be quite complicate procedure to get the maxinum value, plus you missed the all-you-can-travel Metro pass which comes in handy for 1-day Tokyo mad-dash

NRT --> Shinjuku : Package Discount Ticket
Assume no local transport / other use of Suica
Shinjuku --> NRT : Get the NEX ticket using the vendor machine, put in the Suica first to "burn-out" the value of Suica and top-up the remaining (1810 yen)
Go to the ticket office and ask for cancel and get back the 500 yen deposit (which ends up the total cost for the day is 4840 yen)

The Cheapest way I think would be to take the Keisei Local (not the Skyliner) from Narita to Nippori. It will cost you 1000 yen.

When you get off at Nippori, go on the Yamanote Line to Shinjuku, that will cost you 190 yen

Total return will be 1190 x 2 = 2380 yen. I think this is your most economical way.

If at the end of the day, you need to go back to NRT faster, you can catch the Skyliner (also from Nippori) for 1920 yen. But if you check the schedule, the Keisei Skyliner is only about 20-25 minutes faster than the 1000 yen local train. So it depends on your schedule. If you go on their website, they have all the times for both trains.

Are you referring to Narita the city or Narita (NRT) the airport?

I am talking about narita airport. I have read that the Keisei express train, if taken before 9 a.m) gets you a discount of 500 yen. I wonder are these trains (Narita airport to nippori) very busy at 8:30 a.m? I was thinking to leave the airport at that time and then head to shinjuku with a conncetion from nippori.

Those are Keisei Morning Liner, it is 1000 yen basic fare + 400 yen liner ticket. They serve 2 additional station at Sakura and Yachiyodai, they depart airport 7:52 or 8:35. After that you can always opt between Skyliner or the Limited Express ticket

On another subject for a moment, I would like to do some type of a day trip (not tokyo or kamakura) . I looked at Hakone but it seems a bit too expensive to get to ( about 4000 RT or 5000 with the pass). Is there any scenic spots like hakone but perhaps a bit cheaper on the transoprtation side either from narita or tokyo?

(or see both, it takes about 50 minutes and around 500yen to travel from Takaosanguchi to Noborito)

Noborito is one of my favorite station names -- if they have a Mexican restaurant there, it only serves tacos and enchiladas.

To get to Takaosanguichi, make sure you take an Odakyu line express. It's cheaper than JR and you don't have to change at Takao.

Odakyu Line will take you to Hakone, KEIO LINE from Shinjuku Station will take you to Takaosanguchi , make sure you get on the ones marked as "SPECIAL EXPRESS (red sign)" or "SEMI SPECIAL EXPRESS (orange sign) for TAKAOSANGUCHI.

Keio offers some discount tickets for the trip if you plan to use the cable car or chair lift (I like the chair lift) on Takao.

I don't know what the cost is, but an alternative way to combine a boat ride with a ropeway ride would be Nokogiriyama.

I've not been and don't know how much it costs to get there by ferry. So I've no idea if this is a cheaper option than getting the Hakone Free Pass. The Buddha at Nokogiri yama does look extremely impressive, I'm sure it would make a wonderful day trip.

I'd be glad for the information if anyone has it (or can read it) as it's an outing I'd like to go on myself one day (hopefully soon).

I did Nokogiriyama about a year ago. Great day trip. Basically, you take JR Yokosuka Line or Keikyu Main Line through Yokohama to Kurihama (this is also where the slow JR trains from NRT terminate), and then hike from there to the Tokyo Bay Ferry Terminal. Along the way, you can stop at the Commodore Perry Museum and the monument marking the spot where he landed in 1854.

The boat runs every 45 minutes or so and takes 35 minutes to cross the bay (700 yen one way, 1280 round-trip). Cars, bikes and motorcycles are all accepted at varying prices. Then you hike a little farther to the ropeway, which is 900 yen round-trip and open from 9 am to 5 pm.

There is also a direct train from the foot of the mountain to Chiba City (Uchibo Line), which is about 90 minutes and 1,110 yen each way. Chiba is between Tokyo and NRT on the JR line, so this is a convenient way to start or finish if you are flying the same day.

The stone Buddha at Nokogiriyama is the largest Buddha in Japan and well worth visiting (photo). Note that there are LOTS of steps to climb and descend, even if you take the ropeway to the mountaintop and back, so you had better have strong legs and feet.
