You can buy regular ambassador, but not RA. Though if you do not stay in IC properties very often, it might not be worth the $150 for you (if you haven't already upgraded, that is) as the ambassador benefits are only good at IC.

I was renewed over the weekend. My expiration was January 2010.

I have:

68 nights 11/08-10/09
65 qualifying nights calendar year 2009 to date
39 of those qualifying nights at InterContinental Hotels, at 14 different ICs

My RA membership expired at end of May and I wasn't renewed (very few IHG nights between January and May due to illness) - have had lots of stays since then, mainly at HIX and HI properties in the UK at very low rates (I'm paying an average of £17.50 a night at a UK HI on the 2-4-1 offer) but an occasional IC on trips abroad. My two night HI stay from last weekend posted yesterday and today my RA status is back (hooray).

My last twelve months paid stays (i.e. since 21 Nov 2008) total exactly 55 nights, including 8 nights in 7 different ICs in five different countries. Looking back to when I first got RA in 2007, that was also with exactly 55 nights, but only two paid IC stays (plus one on points).

I think this adds weight to the theories above that 55 nights is the magic number, and as long as you have 3 or more IC stays the actual pattern of your stays (whether it is all IC or all HIX) and the amount you spend is not part of the calculation. I also suspect that reward nights may count towards your "3 different ICs" but not towards the magic 55 nights, but that is only based on what happened to me in 2007.

Now I just need to drop an email to the IC Willard and IC San Francisco to ask them to note my new status for some stays in December, as it's unlikely I'll get the new card by then.

1st of all "Nice One!" for getting the RA status again.^

Do you have many points stays / non qualifying stays as well?
I'm not sure how these fit into the calculations but I'm sure they do somewhere.

Can I ask which HI this is at? The cheapest I can find anywhere near anything interesting is about £26pn, and I can see myself needing a mattress run stint if things don't pick up before the summer...

I.e. Bolton will go as low as 15 pounds per night, and a lot more in the LIV/ MAN area.

HI nottingham/Derby M1 J24 (or something like that) - single room is £35 per night and 2-4-1 always posts as 2 nights. Not bad if they're quiet as i get upgraded to an okay exec room, but it's been full recently and the single rooms are a bit miserable. Location isn't great, unless you have lots of family and friends nearby to visit (which i do)

Another data point. Just renewed my RA status with 3 IC paid stays and 1 free IC stay, plus ~190 paid nights in the same HI. Of course, at ~240 hotel nights this year, i do start to wonder why i even bother with a house!

Upgraded to RA last week.

Joined Ambassador program in February 2009, with expiry end March 2010.

56 paid nights at IC from February to December 2009
Only paid stays at 2 different IC, but had an award stay at a third one.

Expiry date of my RA status is 31 March 2010.

With a membership expiry of Feb 2010, I was renewed 3 December 2009 with 59 qualifying nights posted (plus two stayed not yet posted) in previous 12 months (i.e. since Dec 2008). 16 of the 59 nights at ICs.

In addition, I've stayed 24 reward nights if they take these into account (which they did on the 1% letter).

Very happy with the result and most of the service provided to me as RA over the last year.

Rewards night

Are there any indication that rewards nights count toward the 'magic' 50/55 night RA qualifying limit?

WOW! I thought I spent a lot of time in hotels with 121 nights in IHG properties this year plus about another 30 in various others, but 240 is extreme You should just rent your house out

Acording to Ambassador Services, only "qualifying nights" count towards RA status/renewal.
