Will IHG extend expiration on certificates, which are set to expire on 12/31/21?

Just wondering if IHG has a plan to extend the expiration of Chase certificates beyond 12/31/21?
The borders are still closed for free travel.

I wouldn’t bet on it. IHG seems happy to alienate customers this year. Hilton and Hyatt have done far more.

For the IHG free night certificates, do you have to complete stay by 12/31/21 or only book before 12/31/21. THanks!

Basically, both, although sometimes you can book by the expiration for a stay within a week after expiration. That was a small loophole in the past that might have been closed by now.

I never used the ones issued in 2019 and 2020 so now I have 2 expiring 31 December. I think they probably will extend them again given what other chains are doing. However, I hope it is not like last year when they did not announce officially until mid December.

I think that loophole is closed now. I was initially allowed to book a night 1/1/22-1/2/22 with an expiring 12/31/21 cert. But when I checked a few days later, IHG had switched the certs I was using for the stay. It replaced the 12/31/21 cert with another one expiring later in 2022. The 12/31/21 cert was put back into my account.

Now that Marriott extends their free night certs again, will IHG follow? We have 4 certs that expire at the end of the year, or early next year. 🤞

If IHG follows Marriott's rules, those certificates that expire the end of December won't be extended. So, hopefully they do it like Hilton...

Marriott had extended all certificate to Jan 3, which had now been extended to June 30.

I believe they pushed the decision out to the last minute last year because they could not cancel old certificates out of account when they extended dates, those were in essence new certificates. A few people I believe were able to use their old certificates last minute and also bank the new certificate. They likely do not want a repeat.

From what I heard, only those that were issued in 2021 are being extended. You can tell which were issued when by looking at the "valid from" date in the award cert details. If it the "valid from" date is in 2020, it may be not get extended again.

You are correct. My husband and I both received emails about the extension.

I spoke with an agent today, and on checking with her supervisor, she said they were just notified yesterday that certificates issued in 2020 that were extended into 2021 will also be extended another year, into 2022.

She said the Ambassador promotion certificates will not be extended. I have one that expires Nov 2021.
