Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Could it be determined by profile:

leisure profile: $ spending > nights
business profile: 60night (corportate rate?) > spend

Tomorrow a stay at IC parklane so will see if my RA is a dream, jinx, hoax or fata morgana

Someone brighter explain please.....EQP is Elite Qualifying Points right?

How does this translate to spend? Or indeed does it? I ask as my EQP has disappeared since renewal but was I'm sure well over 250,000. Got 14k for 2017 to date...not bad in 3 days.

I'm going to email Amb center in a minute to confirm this but was at least this...if it has some form of equation to spend I'd like to understand that more.

Cheers

EQP is Elite Qualifying Points.

These are (generally) related to spend meaning 1USD equals 10EQP.

e.g. if you have 14k points already you have spend about 1,400.00 USD with IHG this year.

You are wasting your time contacting them. It's still the mythical 1% as far as they are concerned.

Thanks ixs for explaining so clearly. And indeed spend this year (2017) to date is almost exactly 1400 but GBP so that stacks nicely.

More concerningly is my EQP which cannot be 250k. It was definitely 6 figures. Mind you would include IHG credit card spend as well? I probably dropped maybe 30k...maybe more on that. Will def check with Amb center on EQP, definitely curious now.

I think my renewal is definitely on spend not so much nights which although my nights beat the previous 75/30/3 thing were nothing special compared to previous years were I was hitting 230-250 nights per year.

Thanks for explaining

Could be although another IC guy (a knowledgeable one) today confirmed to me that spend is definitely a factor now.....could still be on the 1% basis I guess and indeed my number are concerning high if as ixs explains (and I'm sure he's correct) that EQP is roughly 1 GBP or indeed USD.

Thinking on although my nights were modest....53 +/- IC nights, the spend at them this year was definitely higher than the normal for me.

Requalification on January 4.

My RA Requalification posted on January 4th.
Previously it happened in early October, more recently in early December. Looks like now they have changed the qualification period.
My Elite Status Expiration Date is now December 31, 2019 on the site (this might be due to rollovers?)
My Royal Ambassador Card on the phone app says Ambassador Expiration 30 Dec 2017 (weird, there is no grace period, you'd think at least Jan 31 2018?, and not even Dec 31st!)

Numbers:
186 Elite Qualifying Nights, less 42 rollover = 144 total nights at IHG.
62 nights in ICH hotels
Number of different ICH hotels = 25
386,503 Elite Qualifying Points,
168,335 EQPs from the ICH stays, so about $17K spend. Plus $3K spend from non-qualifying nights (second rooms).

I think spend is a factor but I don't think there's a $10k IC requirement as some have speculated. My total IHG spend was ~$28,000 but my IC spend was only ~$8,500.

I would imagine they're looking at your total IHG stats, but with a focus on IC activity. Don't focus solely on IC stays though. If you're traveling to a place without an IC hotel, don't just abandon IHG and book with another chain. Instead book a HI or HIX or whatever so that you can boost your total IHG spend.

This has been my strategy for 3 years and it has worked.

Question/thought... Is your missing Venetian spend 9nights circa us$3500++ to get you to $10k IC spend?

just look at one failure, PseudoNim totals, has all of more nights, more IC Spend, more total spend???
Pseudo Nim 90/58/15 IC spend $9,500, $17K across chain (175K EQP)
scubaccr hi there, having been helped to a better understand of EQP and spend I know believe my PA spend to about £25k of which I'd say maybe 21/22 of that is IC spend. Just to help with the Wiki data. Cheers

80/56/11 $14973++ = IC us$12858+ / non-IC us$2115++

Annoying but... I simply can't average us$350/IC-night in APAC region like I do in Europe to spend us$10k on roomrates in just 30nights.
For early 2017 APAC IC's I seem to average only a low us$200++, and then only $200/night average as book costlier SYD/MEL/HKG/DaNang nights in APAC, so would need 50 APAC IC nights for us$10K and 62 APAC IC nights for us$12.5k (excudes any f+b spend)

Great start to 2017 for me on IC stays/nights front, 8th Jan - 6th Feb
total of 26 IC nights and us$5096++ on roomrate. Thats halfway towards RA requal for 2018 (I hope ) with 11months still to go.

Though that is miles away from managing to requal as RA for 2018 from 35 IC nights with us10k .
I'd need 10x more Amsterdam/ParkLane/Paris-LG $500/gbp400/euro475 nights for that now.... and it could be RA target is a bit higher than us10k.

I really wanted to shift a few nights to MR (Marriott) to get MR-Gold to go with IHG and HH-Diamond.

Only reason to make HI/CP/HIE nights now will be for Accelerator tasks ! , as not needed anymore to hit total of 60/75 IHG nights.
an alternative heuristic may be to just divide your IC stay EQP's by 10.

Probably IHG also judges each member's ADR (Average Daily Rate: Included incidental spend) of InterContinental stay.
Otherwise, this fluctuation of renew cannot be explained.

finally the correct conclusion about renewals, it cannot be explained exactly

likely just how IHG wants it, you will not know if you met the number of stays or spend, you do not know if CP or HI stays help you or not

in the end, if you really like RA status, IHG is hoping to get most of your stays in 2017, you cannot just stop when you reach "x" level

there are likely several parameters being used to judge your worthiness
